There was a lot of unnecessary detail and filler in this book that bogged it down, and the premise was kind of a snooze fest … I mean, it’s about a wooden duck. But the characters were entertaining, and I liked the dynamic between Laurie and Nick. This was a fast read, and entertaining enough, but there was certainly nothing gripping about it.
Some interesting plot lines, but too much story told through description rather than scenes. Fell flat.
Giving this one 4 stars was hard because I really found it difficult to like the main character, even though I loved the story.
This book went nowhere for me. Very bored. Not worth finishing.
A romantic comedy with a twist on HEA.
Plus a little bit of a mystery.

Finding the third way
Laurie, a 39-year-old wildlife journalist, is clearing out her great-aunt's house, where she comes across a duck decoy. Flying Solo is about her discovering the story of the decoy. Flying Solo is about what it's like to be a 39-year-old woman who knows that she values independence but needs to figure out what exactly that means for her.
This really hit home. I didn't meet my now-husband until I was almost 38, and hadn't been in a long-term relationship before that. I had definitely reached a point where I wasn't assuming my future included sharing it with someone. I was happy living on my own. Laurie returns to her hometown, and runs smack into her high school boyfriend, and thus has to figure out what she wants.
I loved reading about a woman who's happy and comfortable in her single life; she isn't looking for romance. She looks at her great-aunt's life, she looks at her friends and family, and she needs to figure out what she wants and how that shakes out. She can be frustrating, but in a very real way, and her friends are realistic enough to call her out.
I also just got back from my honeymoon on Cape Cod, so the New England setting was pleasant. I would like to inherit a house on the water in New England, thank you please.
Recommend.
