It really boils down to all the ways, conscious and unconscious, our brain decides how much we can endure. We can teach our brains and bodies to endure more. There are practical limits. That's a damn good thing. Mental toughness, always, for the win.

Some very interesting tidbits but would have been better as a long article. Not worth the full read IMO.
What I got out of it:
Our physical limits are mostly mental limits.
There are ways to trick yourself into pushing harder.
Carbs are better for runners than high fat low carb unless you’re doing mega distance (because then you train to use your own fat when depleted), otherwise it’s generally limiting
Placebo effect is great for athletes too (cold bath, performance enhancers, etc)

This book was super interesting and ultimately concluded what all sports science concludes: that human bodies are so weird and it’s fun and sometimes useful to poke at ourselves to figure out bits of what makes us perform at a certain level, but were so complex that no one will ever unlock any kind of amazing secret. Honestly that’s part of what makes it so interesting, at the same time that it’s frustrating not to fully understand what goes on in our minds and bodies when we endure, when we chase and push and drive ourselves toward something great or unknown. This book is like a lot of sports science books. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fascinating. And I really liked the ending; Hutchinson crafts a good last sentence ;)

More like 3.5.
Extremely well researched and written, but science heavy and dense. Not the book for me, but still a very good book.
