It’s a bit hard for me to review a children’s book fairly - I don’t remember what I would have wanted to read at that age, but this book was so good at not being condescending or too revealing with its secret I feel that I’d think it’s great. Because it is - I really liked the magical realism, the complexity of its characters (especially Queeny and Eli), and the hard topic Zana Fraillon has chosen - the refugee centre in Australia.
It’s a lovely heart-wrenching read, that might not stay with only because I’m a bit older and the books I read on the topic are slightly different; I don’t need something to make me aware of how bad it is, but a good analysis to think of how to make things better. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less deserving of being on other people’s shelves.
