This was by far the best book in the flowers in the attic series. We really understand why the grandmother Olivia was so mean to the children in the first book. We understand where it all stemmed from and I totally understand why she feels that way now. Malcolm was a monster who continued to hurt her, and he cared less about hurting her. There is another layer to the story that I was just not ready for.

I can’t believe I’ve finally finished this series, i’m going to miss it so much! This was a perfect prequel in my opinion, it gives you a really insightful backstory to Olivia and why she is the way she is in Flowers In The Attic. I felt a lot of empathy for her throughout this book, she’s clearly just a woman trapped in a cycle of a dysfunctional family with no way of escaping, and unfortunately like many people do in real life, she continues that cycle onto her children and grandchildren. I’m not saying she did not wrong, she absolutely has her flaws and her behaviour and attitude, especially towards Alicia, was horrific at times, but this gives you a bit more understanding as to why she behaves that way.

I truly just love V.C. Andrews’ writing so much, and i will absolutely be picking up the Heaven series soon!

This book was dark like the rest of them. I do get very frustrated with the sexism and abuse to women in this series overall. In the series we didn't understand how Olivia could do that to the kids who didn't have a choice of parents. I felt a little bad here and there for Olivia because Malcom was a sorry excuse for a man/husband, but not enough to justify everything she did and I was even less forgiving of Malcom. That man had mommy issues and was a religious hypocrite. The way religion was used to justify their actions made me even angrier. I hated John Amos and Joel as people, too.  This prequel did help with understand how the series started. It all started with one horrible man.
