I'm honestly speechless. If I talk, I'll ramble. I don't know what to say.

Everything, from the characters to the writing style to the plot, was absolutely stunning. I envy people
who are picking up The Book Thief for the first time, since they'll get to feel the magic I want to feel again.

REREAD #3 — 24th August, 2019: Damn you, Markus Zusak. You tear up my heart and step on it every goddamn time I read this book, and still I keep coming back to you.

REREAD #4 — 24th January, 2020: What did the world do to deserve this beautiful book?

REREAD #5 — 19th March, 2021: I've noticed many previously unnoticed things — Ilsa Hermanns in my life, Liesel's illiteracy being mistaken for ignorance, how Rudy's pride led to his downfall, and how Max rebelled against Nazi Germany in the smallest of ways. The Book Thief is a magical story.

REREAD #6 — 11th July, 2022: That feeling after finishing this book again.

"The Book Thief" is a mediocre novel at best and undeserving of the high praise it continues to receive. The narration of the novel through the eyes of Death adds nothing to the story except to remind the reader that a lot of people died (and unjustly so in the case of the Jews), during WWII. This isn't a startling revelation, and through the narration of Death unfolds a watered down retelling of a high level timeline of events that transpired during the war.

The generic theme that "words are power" can be appreciated by many, but the author does little to add or expand to this cliche, rendering the characters static in their development. Liesel, Hans, Rosa and Rudy were predictable and tame in contrast to the setting of a Germany embroiled in a destructive war. It's boring to read about good-hearted characters through and through. If their major flaws are to be too nice, too good and too selfless, it's no fun to read about, and is idealistically naive.

The book was too generic and too "safe" to be considered anything but plain and unsurprising.

I never cried at this book. I never laughed. I never felt fear. I was too absorbed in the magnitude of what I was witnessing to really respond in any way other than awe. In its basis, this book is a story about a girl and a Jew and death. In reality, it is about so much more. I get why this is one of the most famous books. It has to be. It feels like I just read someone's entire life and then some in the space of a few hours. This is a book I will not soon forget.

It was an emotional coaster ride. It was quite different on how narrator was chosen and story was laid out by him. It's amazing to see so many characters weaved through Liesel's main character and each one of them played a role in this. Amazing read and it does make you feel how world had/has been cruel to itself. Irony is that I don't think world has changed from then to now and don't think there is any hope there anytime in future either.
