I might need therapy after reading this. I think all but 3 characters in the entire book should have been diagnosed with 1950's insane housewife syndrome. Does that even exist?

What a struggle listening to this book on CD. Kept thinking it would get better, it did not. Three self indulgent children moving back home to a ridiculous family. I sometimes challenge myself to try something different especially with books on CD. What a waste of my time.

I enjoy Jennifer Close's novels as they are about twenty somethings finding their way post-college. This novel focused on a family and had rotating narrators with each chapter.

I loved Jennifer Close's debut novel, and had high hopes for this follow up, but it didn't quite get there for me. I liked the structure - a year in the life of this family, basically - but felt like the narrative device of shifting focus between the various characters didn't work as well this time around, at least for me. It was a decent read and I will definitely continue to follow Close's future work, but not quite as in love with this effort.

I found the characters and story engaging; it was readable. But, I have to admit, I did not love the writing. It told you too much without showing you much of anything. Meh.

This book was alright. The characters were either really fleshed out like the daughters or super flat like the dad. I think I would have liked this less if I hadn't listened to the audio book.

Read (listened to) this one on a whim because it was read by one of my favorite narrators, Rebecca Lowman. It had potential. Some of the characters were very interesting, but the plot pretty much disappeared halfway through. It's as if the author got stuck and then finished the book with NOTHING happening.

Added this to my to read list back in January and started reading it about a week ago. I have to admit I didn't love it. I had high hopes after reading Girls In White Dresses (which was FANTASTIC) but this didn't really do anything for me. I felt there were too many different stories and loose ends and it didn't flow and was kind of slow. I definitely didn't love it.

Finished this up a few days ago. Overall, an okay book, 3 stars, but with a really good audiobook (4.5 stars). It was largely character-driven as opposed to plot, which I liked. I think getting the perspective of the four women, seeing their major and minor life changes were affecting them and those around them, was interesting. There were some moments that I didn't like, which they could be more me than anything, but I discuss everything in detail in my full, non-spoiler review on my blog: http://taleswithkayla.com/br-thesmartone/
