I loved this book. I hate that Wendig can’t write anything shorter than the bible. But I loved it anyway.

Wendig continues to be my favorite horror writer in the game. For someone not particularly fond of the genre, his books grip me from the first page, never let go, and this one is no different.
Every Wendig novel features a cast of the most tangible characters imaginable, and this one is right up there with Book of Accidents and Wanderers. If you need a spooky book for the fall and you’re craving a delicious cider, I couldn’t recommend it more.

Delightfully weird, creepy horror. Special apples, mysterious healing, murder mystery, a town going crazy, tempers rising, violence, and changed personalities. Sacrifices needed for the orchard. Also mixed in is very interesting history of native Americans and apples. I really enjoy this author’s unique and inventive stories. They are always surprising and entertaining.

Wendig's brusque prose and snappy plotting drew me in immediately, and I enjoyed the first few hundred pages of this novel immensely. Lack of character development made it hard for me to hold on for the full 600 plus pages, and the multitude of pop-culture references was a little distracting.
I wouldn't call this a timeless novel, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for gory horror during Spooky Season, fans of Stephen King and Joe Hill, and anyone who really enjoys the word frisson.

The book has a slow start and then builds to a terrifying but very juicy crescendo. Wendig's books have an ability to move between past and present seamlessly while people in the present make the same mistakes that happened in the past. In this case, it is the grafting of an ancient evil apple tree. I do not want to give any spoilers but I will say that on the surface this book is about an apple that makes people feel invincible but causes them to want to protect it at great lengths but it is so much more than that. While reading the book I could not help but think about American Greed and how it crushes the souls of some as they sacrifice the rights and dignity of others. Read it to find out more. It's horrible and I loved it.
