Bee Larkham ist verschwunden und ihr vierzehnjähriger Nachbar Jasper behauptet, sie ermordet zu haben. Von dieser Ausgangssituation aus wird zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit gewechselt. Wir erfahren einerseits, wie Bee Larkham in die Nachbarschaft, Ort ihrer Kindheit, zurückgekehrt ist und das friedliche Nachbarschaftsleben mit lauter Musik und Widerspenstigkeit aus dem Gleichgewicht gebracht hat; wie sie Jasper um den Finger gewickelt und sich für Nettigkeiten kleine Gegenleistungen von ihm erschlichen hat. In der Gegenwart wird Bees Verschwinden untersucht: Ist sie verreist oder wurde ihr etwas angetan? Wir erfahren mehr über Jasper, der Synästhesie und Prosopagnosie hat. Das bedeutet, dass er Klänge, Wörter und Zahlen in Form von Farben wahrnimmt und dass er sich keine Gesichter merken kann. Er leidet unter dem Tod seiner Mutter, fühlt sich nicht verstanden von seinem Vater und sucht Trost in Zeichnungen, um die Welt zu zeigen wie er sie sieht, und dem Beobachten von Vögeln (und gerne auch mal dem Treiben der Nachbar:innen).
Geschildert werden beide Zeitebenen aus Jaspers Perspektive. Das ist einerseits eine Bereicherung, denn seine Weltsicht wirkt wie in einen hundertteiligen Tuschkasten getunkt: vom pommeselben Bellen des Nachbarhundes über das unangenehme Kotzorange von Schimpfwörtern bis zum Kobaltblau der Stimme seiner Mutter. Andererseits erschwert Jaspers Gesichtsblindheit die Ermittlungen und erschwert eine klare Darstellung des Geschehenen. Um andere Menschen zu erkennen, ist Jasper auf deren Frisuren, Kleidungsstile und Stimmfarben angewiesen. Wenn sich jemand die Haare färbt oder eine Erkältung hat, kann das fatale Auswirkungen auf seine Erkennungsmuster haben. Dazu kommt die Naivität und Aufrichtigkeit eines beinahe-noch-Kindes, das sich ohne seine stärkste Bezugsperson in einer Welt zurechtfinden muss, die ausschließlich für neurotypische Menschen gestaltet ist. Manchmal führt das zu trockenem Humor vom feinsten, dann wieder zu einer Infragestellung der Norm und emotionalen Mitfühlmomenten.
Die stückchenhafte Enthüllung der Vergangenheit, Bees bröckelnde Fassade der freundlichen Nachbarin und die angespannte Situation der restlichen Straßenbewohner lässt alle Figuren früher oder später unter Verdacht geraten. So entspinnt sich eine spannende Detektivgeschichte, die durch Jaspers Perspektive zu einem farbenfrohen Gesamtkunstwerk wird.

ספר מתח טוב שמתאים גם למי שלא אוהב ספרי מתח.
ג'ספר חווה את העולם בערבוביה של צבעים. יש לו סינסטזיה מה שאומר הוא רואה קולות כצבעים שונים. בנוסף, יש לי עיוורון פרצופים ולכן נעזר ביכולת שלו על מנת לנווט בעולם. אפילו את אבא שלו הוא מזהה לפי הקול. בנוסף, לג'ספר יש אוטיזם קל רואים את זה בעיקר בתכונה שלו להבין דברים פשוטם כמשמעם.
בספר, ג'ספר בטוח שהשכנה שלו נרצחה, אבל קשה לו להבין מה קרה שם בדיוק. הוא לא יודע איך הוא יצליח להסביר לממשטרה שמשהו רע מאוד קרה שם.
אני ממש נהניתי מהכתיבה. ברגע שהתרגלתי לתיאורים של הצבעים, הבנתי מה ג'ספר מרגיש, וזה פתח לי פתח לעולם שמאוד קשה להבין אותו.
יחד עם זאת, חשוב לי מאוד לציין שסינסטזיה ואוטיזם הם לא דברים שתמיד הולכים ביחד. להרבה אנשים יש סינסטזיה, אולי לא ברמה של ג'ספר, אבל זה משהו שקיים.

This is a good mystery novel with a very unique narrator. Jasper is a 13 year old boy who has face blindness and synesthesia, which means he sees sounds as colours. It’s also hinted that he might be autistic. This is an experience and perspective, you don’t get to read about often, not from a first person view.
This boy who sees the world in a different way from most and navigates the world in a different way.
You could say that Jasper is unreliable or frustrating at telling the story but then you miss the point. This is how he thinks, how his mind operates is difficult to understand. This makes the novel unique. There is such beauty in the descriptions of the colours he sees, a vividness that I have no imagination for. This is something that stands out in this book. The descriptions of the colours of every sound around him, what sounds/colours/words he likes or dislikes.
I was also fascinated by the fact that there are no real facial descriptions of people. Yet I still created those in my own mind, as the colours of each character's voice helped to paint a picture of what they looked liked.
I enjoyed the mystery and was somewhat surprised by the ending which is how should be. But I was more drawn to the descriptions and the the way this boy lives his life. Some of it was repetitive and time consuming but I grew to enjoy this unconventional storyteller. There was a certain amount of going forward to go back again and I liked that too.
I’ve no experience with any of the issues that Jasper has in this book. I do not know if they are ‘authentic’ to lived experiences but I felt empathy, and also sympathy, for him and I felt a connection.
Some of the downsides where that it took me 3 attempts to get into the novel. I did find it difficult at first and although the mystery was good I wasn’t completely blown away. I definitely was gripped come the end but more on what happened next with Jasper and not ‘who did it’. I would recommend it to anyone that likes unconventional stories.

I'm not really sure what to think of this book, there were some scenes and concepts that felt quite ableistic and sexist to me and while the overall story was intriguing, there were also a lot of scenes to bored me. So yeah, interesting idea, but questionable execution I guess.
