Fucked up little book! I liked the ending and how Naomi and Sloane play off each other - one wants a settled and quiet life to her detriment and one wants to follow her desires and wild impulses to her detriment. Vampires are the least of it!

I WANTED so badly to love this because I love vampires. I grew up like pretty much every other millennial in obsessing over Vampire Diaries, The Originals, True Blood, Twilight, Interview with a Vampire, Blade, Underworld, you get it! However, this was a bit of a letdown.

I absolutely love that horror often provides commentaries on the human condition, and I appreciate a story about femme friendship and going after the life you deserve. However, Sloane, our main character was just so bland and couldn't be less interested in anything that happened in this book. Dreading your birthday and reckoning with the fact that your marriage is basically over? Yes, that CAN be horrifying and heartbreaking, but Sloane was like, 'yeah, I guess that's sad la dee dahhhh.' Again, I sympathize with getting past the point of despair when you just dip into resignation. However, besides being scared as she saw her friend getting mauled, she had almost no range of emotions for 90% of this book. To be frank, she was a boring character to follow.

I just wish Sloane displayed some intrigue at some point throughout this book. I will try to read more from this author, but this book ended up just being okay. You probably could have taken the vampire elements out of it and written the exact same book (that's how little the vampire elements added tot this narrative idk) about two friends going to a cabin for a weekend and deciding to run away from their lives forever, and then no one hears from them again. Actually, that has the potential to be more fascinating.

Books I have loved with vampires to give you an idea of my taste (lol GET IT!?!?!?! I am unstoppable with these puns, cry about it!):
  • Fledgling by Octavia E Butler
  • Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas
  • Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

DID NOT FINISH: 65%

DNF @ 64%
I am bummed about this one. The writing is excellent and the story is interesting, but the book was too easy to put down. Worse, I hate the MCs. They're best friends and it is supposed to be this life-long, loyal friendship-- but they're both garbage humans and their friendship is hella toxic.

I debating DNFing this because I do want to know what happens, but decided to ditch it because it was making me feel gross and frusterated.

Now off to find some spoilers.

This book asks the question: what if a vampire story was mostly about a mid-life crisis? It turns out my answer to that question is: I would not enjoy it. I finished this book partly because it was short, and partly because there were some glimmers of potential throughout that I hoped would payoff. They largely didn’t. But if there was a sequel, I would consider reading it to see if anything payed off there, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
