I love Rachel Harrison, but this wasn’t my favorite of hers. Still a fun adventure, and a not great Rachel Harrison book is still much better than a lot of other books out there. But it didn’t sweep me away like Cackle or Black Sheep or Such Sharp Teeth. Sloane, the MC drove me nuts. While I related to some of her struggles more than I’d like to admit, I grew tired of her emotional hand-wringing pretty quickly. I enjoyed the ending, but I felt like it took much too long to get there. But it was an interesting and fun journey, I just wish she spent less time focusing on Sloane’s self flagellating and more focusing on the world, her specific vampire lore, and the growth of Naomi and Sloane. I did like the inclusion of the vampire watching his human love sleep. I felt like it was handled much better (and much more realistically) than a certain sparkly vampire’s admission of nighttime sleep-watching. Also, Ilia was a delight. He absolutely stole the show for me.

I struggled with this one. I enjoyed the set up, most of the plot elements, and the side characters, - the side characters made the book for me - but Sloane and Naomi made me want to tear my eyes out. I understand that they’re long distance besties, but

after they turned into vampires

they just would not talk at all. I get it;

its’s a big thing to become a vampire

but TALK TO EACH OTHER! Their issues could have been resolved so much quicker if they meaningfully conversed as friends working out their issues. Their friendship - what’s supposed to be a core tenant of the book - was exhausting and infuriating.
