I was first drawn to this book because of Marcelo-I was interested in reading a book written from the perspective of a character with Asperger’s. I thought it would be a story about Marcelo navigating the real world, but there was so much more. Marcelo finds himself faced with tough decisions, and fighting a battle between what’s right and wrong, and I think anyone can relate to Marcelo’s struggles. There’s some mystery, some romance, and even some religious searching all packed in these pages.
I enjoyed the fact that the book is written in first person from Marcelo’s point of view. It was interesting to get inside Marcelo’s head and understand how he processed things.
Jasmine, Marcelo's co-worker in the mail room, is an inspiration. She’s patient, she’s kind, and she’s smart. I wish more people were as gentle as Jasmine was when she first met Marcelo. Yes, he was slow in his work at first, but she encouraged him and helped him learn instead of getting upset. We could all hope to be like Jasmine, especially when dealing with people who are “different.”
I recently saw a movie trailer for the movie Adam, which is about a man with Asperger's. I think this movie and this book would make great discussion starters!

Marselo, a teen with Asperger's, is forced to work at his father's law firm over the summer so that he can experience "the real world," and is forever changed by this experience.
This was an incredibly HEAVY and thought-provoking story. I cried a couple of times while making my way through it. Marcelo pays a very heavy price for his "real world" experiences. This was a very hard book for me to read, not just because of what was going on in the story, but because the author paints such a poigant and honest picture of our culture and the bad things we do to each other. As much as I loved the book, when I finished, it felt a little bit like I'd been punched in the face.

This book really stands up well. This is my 3 rd time through and the punch is just as potent.
Great book! Perfect characters. It was eye opening to see Marcelo's perspective.
This book was so sweet. I loved reading from Marcelo's perspective, and seeing the world the way he sees it. The plot became more intense than I had been anticipating, which I also thought was good. More books like this should be published. It was so pure and good and wonderful to read.
Dang. This book was absolutely fantastic. It could possibly be my all-time favorite young adult novel.
Marcelo is one of my favorite protagonists ever. His voice is so clear and just marvelous. This book is touching and thought-provoking.
Everyone should read this

This book is beautiful. I think the dialog was a bit stilted and needed some work (especially with Jasmine for some reason), but it's a really beautiful book and a pleasant read.
Excellent! I'm inspired to read more about autism and endeavor to learn more. I almost feel like picking the book up and reading it again to see what else I could glean from the story. Also I want to keep reading about Marcello and finding out how he continues with his dreams. This is definitely a book that I'm happy I read and that I now own.
This is a well-written, thoughtful story about Marcelo, a highly functioning 17-year old with Aspeger's syndrome. Marcelo leaves the comfortable world of his special high school and takes a job in his father's law office, or "the real world." As you might expect, the real world is not always the kindest, easiest place to function. Marcelo learns a lot of unpleasant truths about the ways of the world, including information about his father that he may wish he never knew.
The hardest part about reading this book is encountering all of the characters who are mean to Marcelo because they believe he is dumb or slow and does not understand that he is being insulted and talked down to. But it is also, unfortunately, true to life and Stork does an admirable job letting his character experience the world without overdramatizing everything.
