I was going to give it a 4 because it was really challenging to know when I was finished due to the format. It was too funny for a 4 though.
I have always liked Neil Patrick Harris, but now I think I love him. He's hilarious and his life is really, really interesting. Definitely pick up the audiobook if you get the chance.

I listened to the audio book version of this, and while the "choose your own" aspect of it had to be reformatted, this was pure entertainment. NPH reads it himself, and it is charming & hilarious.
I would have given this title five stars, but the format - while fun in a gimmicky kind of way - puts it at a solid four. The writing is humorous and entertaining; however, I constantly felt like I missed parts of the story, which caused me to go back and read in a "open to a random page/chapter" kind of way.
I keep reading and reading and I'm still not sure I've finished this - just like choose your own adventures of old. Not much here if you're looking for a real understanding of NPH (the magician uses his flash, style and humor to distract from the fact that he's not revealing a whole lot) but it's a ton of fun and an entertaining read.

NPH says at the beginning of the book that he loved Chose Your Own Adventure Books as a kid. I did too. I still have a very well loved and warn copy of a Goosebumps your own adventure book. And what a brilliant and fun way to write an autobiography.
NPH's voice is true and whimsical and I'm a big fan of the second person P.O.V. You get to pick different paths of his life to lead. You go through his many acting gigs, his love for magic, and his struggles and triumphs dealing with his sexuality. He brings in his alter egos (Barney Stintson and Neil Patrick Harris of the Harold and Kumar films) and words from some co-stars and friends. You get to meet his husband David and learn about their relationship and children (could that family unit be any cuter?).
A super fun aspect of the book is the 'bad' life choices you can make, or the wild endings that usually result in your/Neil's death.
Throughout most of the book, I found myself book marking pages to go back and pick the different scenarios, just like I did as a kid.
The book is nonstop fun, peppered with some moments of deep realization and every now and then some disappointment. But if you play your cards right, everything works out for you/Neil in the end. And even if it doesn't, you can just go back to page one and start again.

this book felt very personal than any other autobiography. with Neil allowing you to be him and make your own choices you actually felt like you knew him on a different level
That was a lot of fun :) I highly recommend the audiobook! The physical book is perfectly fine, but it's much more entertaining to hear NPH tell his own stories. Plus, it intersplices recordings from his past, a guest appearance by his partner, David, and a few slights of hand.
