I imagine the experience of listening versus reading a choose-your-own-adventure book is quite different. But even as an audiobook this was an enjoyable experience. Neil injects lots of humor and acting and general fun into the story of his life. Easy listening!

Reading this book is an experience to say the least. For those of us from a certain generation who grew up with the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books, this format will prove to be a lot of fun. Just like I did when I was a kid, I found myself trying to hold the place of a few choice opportunities so that I could go back later and follow a different path. And just like when I was a kid, this eventually got to be really hard to keep track of so I forced myself to give up and just start over.
There are a few fun surprises in this book. I came across a number of cocktail recipes and a crossword puzzle. (Because why not, right?) There's even one of those token pages that is kind of awesome but you can only get to by "cheating" and flipping through the book at random. Trust me, you can't help but just flip through this book and read a few pages at random. The great thing? NPH tells his life story in such an episodic manner that this actually works. I love that. And I love that NPH knows how to change tone easily depending on what kind of story he's trying to tell. I laughed a lot (my husband and I have been reading funny passages out loud to each other), but there were also plenty of sweet, serious, and/or heartwarming moments.
Do you just want to get some dirt about Neil Patrick Harris? This format isn't great for straightforward information. It's not super hard to find yourself reading about, say, NPH's preschool-aged kids and not having learned anything yet about his Doogie Howser days. But just go with it, because this format is a lot of fun. It's also strangely conversational, and arguably more of an organic way to get to know somebody than a traditional autobiography.

This was fantastic. The format wasn't necessarily for me, but it did add a delightful touch of whimsy and child-like fun that captured NPH perfectly. Sidenote: I went the audiobook route. Different experience, but I like hearing their voice. And he did voices too, which was nice. I recommend audio on this one.
There was so much that I didn't know about NPH. I mean, I haven't really taken the time to stalk him, despite how much I truly adore his acting and singing--basically all-around musical theatre ability. I love HIMYM, I really wish that I could have seen him in Hedwig, Dr. Horrible is great, and every time I've seen him host the Tony's it's been fantastic, but I didn't realize exactly how much he's done. He is...admirable. Greatly admirable.
I don't want to touch on each and every one of his life events, as they're all either inspiring or lovable/adorable. There's no need for me to review that. But as an actor, one thing stood out to me beyond all of the cuteness and love that he displayed for his family or all of the incredibly famous people he has worked with. He said that while he was on HIMYM he decided that Robin seemed like someone that Barney would take an interest in. So he started doing subtle things like lingering his gaze on her or checking out her butt. And now look where the series went! I loooooved Barney and Robin and was heartbroken by their. If that isn't a sign of an incredible actor, than I don't know what is. He knew his character so well, that he started doing minute things that even I--a person who has seen every episode of HIMYM (except for the 2 sad Barney and Robin ones and the finale) literally dozens of times. I have it on all the time--didn't notice He did it so quietly and naturally because he thought it was in character. I just can't say enough about the brilliance and dedication of this, honestly, quite daring move. We should all dare to be that actor. That's the actor that I want to be.
Anyway, I idolize NPH now more than before, he is basically perfect to me now--though I'm not a fan of the bald thing he's doing now, but I guess that's for a movie--and can't wait to see him in all that he does. I hope for nothing but love and whimsy in his life.

This book was magical. Literally. There are magic tricks in it.
The format was great- I read it through as a regular book the first time around, to make sure I saw everything, but the choose-your-own-adventure format really does work well. NPH needn't be any more talented than he already is, but if he ever needed a full time writing gig he would certainly do well for himself.

Super easy to listen to. Neil Patrick Harris, unsurprisingly, brings a lot of laughs, plenty of 'aww's, and no small amount of thoughtful reflection. It's exactly as awesome as you would expect an autobiography of NPH to be.
I'm a bit disappointed that my Audible.com audiobook did not 'come with the PDF' that was frequently mentioned, though. Because the extras supposedly to be contained therein would have been great.

HILARIOUS. Honestly, laugh out loud funny (I swear, I DID laugh out loud). I'm loving biographies and memoirs of any kind as of late, and this is no exception. I loved the "Choose Your Own Adventure" set-up, but will admit I found myself paranoid that I was missing any details and may have gone back JUST TO MAKE SURE that I didn't miss anything. I love you, NPH.
