What a fun read! As a 5 year old, I would call Doogie Howser, my first celebrity crush, on the play phone in my kindergarten room, so I was obviously very excited to read this.
The chapter on Company made me want to go back and watch my DVD of the performance; I did see it live (brag) but I was so excited I don't think I remembered the nuances of the performances that well. I also loved the reference to how unhappy everyone was with the HIMYM finale. Also, I dare anyone to read the chapters about his husband & their children and not feel warm & fuzzy.
The format was really cool but you can read the chapters as they go along, I found; it's not a solid, chronological story but if you're not the biggest fan of Choose Your Own books, it still works.

This book was a delight to read - it's full of wit, anecdotes, and musings. I enjoyed its mix of autobiography, testimonials, and surrealism. Now this book needs to be made into a musical!
This book is not only well written, but when spoken, has a great vibe. I also loved the clip of young Neil saying a childhood speech. The book showcases his talent and originality.
This book was highly entertaining and though the format was a tough fit for an audiobook, having NPH read it was definitely the way to go.
If you like Neil Patrick Harris, you'll enjoy this. It's fun, funny and charming. He shares interesting tidbits about his life and career, and the choose your own adventure theme is clever and plays well throughout. I expected this to be funny, I didn't expect it to be so touching. The reverence and adoration he mentions when talking about his family, partner, and children is lovely. As is the absolute gratitude he seems to have for getting to act for a living. I want NPH to be my friend.

In the past, I've confessed that I'm not a big fan of the Harry Potter books. (To me, they all seem like the same book. Valdemort tries to kill Harry. Harry wins. Rinse, repeat.)
Today, I reveal that I've also never been a fan of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books.
I'm way linear in my reading. I read magazines back to front; never skipping to the article I really want to read. Same with short story anthologies.
I read exactly two CYOA books as a kid. The first nearly drove me insane. I would read each option given, then the all legs off those options, etc. I can't stand not knowing the whole story. The thought of missing something is very distressing for me.
The second CYOA I read as a kid, I just read straight through. Front to back.
That's how I read this book.
I highly recommend this book! Read any way you like, it's a good book.
NPH has had an amazing life! (Which he is constantly humbled and awed by throughout the book.)
This book is very funny. It's also loving and poignant. The chapter about the birthday surprise actually had me in tears.

I was absolutely obsessed with Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was a kid, so it was inevitable that I would be curious about Neil Patrick Harris's unique autobiography format that pays homage to a dear old memory of thrill and excitement from my childhood. Now, to be honest, I never watched Doogie Howser. I'm not a big TV watcher in general, and I don't think I've ever seen Harris in *anything*.
That said, it wasn't the man that inspired me to choose this little gem -- it was purely the format. And, to be honest, I don't think it was the wisest option to read Choose Your Own Autobiography as an e-book. I mean, half the fun was manually flipping ahead to the desired future location, eager to see what new twist would skyrocket your literary journey to crazy new heights, right?! And, of course, a quick click of a hyperlink of sorts pretty much does the same thing in the end -- but it's kind of like hanging up on somebody from a cell phone. The joy of slamming that phone down on the base just isn't as satisfying as a furiously silent push of the hang-up button.
I wasn't thrilled with Choose Your Own Autobiography, but it's just hard for me to judge this one, since I'm not already familiar with Harris and because I selected a lame format for my viewing pleasure. So, take my ramblings with a grain of salt, for sure.
I smiled, I laughed, I clicked, and I got a little bored in places, I admit. I'm not sure that autobiographies are necessarily my forte. But, I'm glad I gave this one a chance -- and I may reread it at a later time when I can enjoy the sound of those pages flipping towards my inevitable doom!
