A choose-your-own-autobiography is a fantastic idea, and NPH does a great job with it. We listened to the audiobook version (read by NPH) so there was no opportunity to jump around like you may do in the book version, but it was highly entertaining to listen to the contents in whatever order they chose to have them played in, and Neil's life story is funny, poignant and interesting.
Loved the audio-book. Narrated by NPH himself, it's hilarious and you really don't lose as much as you'd think from the "choose your own adventure" format. And I say that having loved those books!
I loved the style of this book! It made reading about someone else's life much more interesting than a straight narrative. It was quirky and a fast read to get through one path of NPH's charmed life. I also loved that there were things in it that weren't as preachy as I've seen in other comedic biographies (Amy Poehler's for example. She talked about doing drugs and how they were essential to the creative process and then talked about how her kids are the best people on the planet and my automatic reaction was to recoil and disagree. It was boring to me to be honest). So this biography was refreshing in its "this is what happened, that's the end of it" style. I really enjoyed how his own voice was reflected in the whole book and it was just awesome! My only complaint is my traditional reader brain is struggling to accept that I "finished" the book although I know I didn't read every page...so that's been a struggle but I think if it bothers me more, I will return to the book and choose a new path. A great escapist read! Loved it!
Witty and funny, and also touching, thoughtful and laugh inducing. All of this in the same book.
Liked the strange endings that came up every now and then in the story if you chose wrong.

I love NPH and enjoyed reading the book, but the "choose you own adventure" format was annoying. I still don't think I read the whole thing, even after restarting it three times!
I got to read this book for free with no strings attached-- Blogging for Books sent me a copy and asked for a review. Positive reviews are never required--only honest ones, should you choose to review a book.
I'm not a diehard fan of Neil Patrick Harris. I saw him on How I Met Your Mother, but I haven't seen every episode and really I watched it mostly for Alyson Hannigan anyway. But this book was funny and entertaining and I read it over and over at work, giving the Librarian Glare at any of my coworkers that tried to initiate friendly conversation.
My results: I died once, got stuck in a never-ending job at Shlotsky's once, got to a happy ending twice, and kungaloosh (when you read it you'll understand).
I really liked the intermittent cocktails and recipes sprinkled throughout the book, and one day I'll have to read this book with the recipes on hand to enjoy it properly. What I love about this book is we get to hear from Neil's friends and coworkers as well as him--well, you--since you're choosing your own autobiography. I laughed plenty, got a little teary--mostly happy tears--and only frowned when I had to pause my reading to do actual work.
You can choose what you want to know about Neil too. Want to know about his professional life? There's a path for that. Also a path for his broadway career, television career, love life, family life...don't like Neil patrick Harris? There's a path where he doesn't get famous at all so you have no reason not to get this book.
ALSO--16 dollars!? Criminal! I'd charge at least 25 for the amount of time I'll spend enjoying this one.

By listening to the audiobook, I lost the "Choose Your Own Adventure" page-turning feel and gained NPH's voice. You win some, you lose some. Funny, sweet, occasionally musical, and all-around pretty well done.
I loved choose your own adventure books as a child so this was a delight. Written to the reader, NPH recounts his life - how he/you became an actor, figured out he was gay, met the love of his life. He is refreshingly candid in his choice of anecdotes and applies perspective on the appropriate ones, such as the strangeness of calling Elton John a friend and the way he views his family now as an adult. The stories are funny and fun, with magic tricks tossed in to boot. It is overwhelmingly optimistic, which is how we should all choose to approach life.
I listened to the audiobook... so some of the adventure was lost... BUT I still loved it. NPH voiced the audio. Listening to NPH narrate your life as NPH was, well, legendary.
