The historical aspect was interesting. The characters were generally unlikeable. I have less respect for royalty and nobility after reading this book. Their claims for status and wealth are all a sham.

It is difficult to make a book enjoyable when the protagonist is such an unpleasant human being. Still, Gregory manages to craft a tale - based as much on historical evidence as drama allows - that pulls you in and entertains. It fumbles a bit at the end when the perspective shifts from Margaret's first-person perspective to an omniscient battlefield narrator, but otherwise remains engaging with a wicked little kick at the end. RECOMMENDED.

It’s hard to like a book about a self righteous religious hypocrite. This wasn’t the true Margaret Beaufort & it wasn’t even a better version of her.

Typical Philippa Gregory - her retelling of a story based on her research. I enjoyed it as I've enjoyed all of her books - and learned something in the process. I wish I'd read it before the HBO series, but I still loved it.
