It says everything that even in Esther’s dream life, which she has spent years saving her money for, she would still be in service to others. A better service, to be sure, and one which would be more appreciated by her clientele, but a service nonetheless.

This play had a good plot that kept me interested. Instead of a long, complex show, there were only five separate locations that Esther ever went to. Following her from room to room created an intimate feeling of getting to know Esther and her life. What interested me was how Esther and Mr. Marks' relationship was written in. Both characters recognized that they could never be together because of their race, and I would love to see it play out on stage and the romantic tension those characters hold with each other.

Loved. Loved. Loved. “We stood in that church and promised before God to take care of each other.”

I'm so glad my professor recommended this author to me. This play is realistic, and thus bittersweet, but the characterization is so deep and the storyline is so compelling. I can't wait to read another by Nottage, and I hope someday to see a performance.
