I thought this was another great volume. There were plenty of laughs and I did need a few tissues.

The first half centering around Rin I really enjoyed, but the second half of this wasn't nearly as interesting. I guess I'm just not big on the comic relief portions of this series, and just prefer the more serious side of it.

I'm rereading the Fruits Basket manga, so here are my notes about Volume 14:
- There is a lot of quotable text in Fruits Basket, but I relate to this one so much:
"People who know how scary it is to be alone can't help loving others." - Page 166
- The author always has so many interesting things to talk about in the side panels. Like how Momiji was originally going to be called Kureno and vice versa! I still think that it was a happy accident because "Kureno" sounds smooth and calm, like Kureno, and "Momiji" sounds bouncy and playful, just like Momiji!
- There's been one panel in all of the Fruits Basket volumes that I can still picture after all these years since I read the series for the first time. That panel showed up in this volume! In case you're curious, it was the panel that depicts Haru and Rin's first kiss on pg. 62. :)
I'm so excited to finally finish this series, since the first time I read it, the last one wasn't out yet. I'm also SUPER sad because I love all these characters and the plot and I just...GAH! I love it so much! Anyway, onto Volume 15!

This volume starts off with giving us the first real opportunity to get some insight into Rin's backstory and her past ties with Haru. Rin probably has one of my favourite character designs in Fruits Basket as a whole. You can tell just by looking at her the kind of life she's experienced and that makes learning about her history that much more compelling.
However, what really caught my attention though was Yuki's revelation at the end of this volume. It was absolutely stupendous! I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying his character. The direction his character is taking is really interesting. I didn't think the student council group would play such a large role in his growth but I'm really curious to see where he ends up, which is more then I can say compared to my feelings for his at the beginning of the series when he was very much overshadowed by my love for Kyo.

I loved this volume. Yuki's realization at the end makes sense specially in light of the events in this volume. Tohru, in following her mother's footsteps, has been a mother figure for all these kids. Even though she's the same age as most of the zodiac charcaters, and in some cases even younger, she acts as a surrogate mother.
Tohru's unconditional love for these characters and the way she takes care of them is a stark contrast to Akito's constant abuse and manipulation. Where she wins them over with affection, he binds them to him by force. I think its telling that Akito is threatened by the easy way Tohru attracts the zodiac characters to her.
Oh another note, I quite love the romantic pairings in this manga. This author is particularly good at showing mature, steady love as opposed to the flashy, superficial ones we so often see in shoujo mangas. Specially Haru and Rin who have grown on me as a couple this last few volumes. There's something about loving someone so completely, passionately, and unconditionally that just gets to me. Their relationship is almost an indication of what Tohru and Kyou could have one day. And with the way things are progressing, it seems that day is getting ever closer.
This volume contains chapters 78-83. 4 stars.
