Best part: the fully realized world (a medieval Poland where evil magic is taking over the land), and the narrator telling the story with careful, Russian-accented voice.

Some parts of this book I would have given a 5 star rating but there were to many parts that left me unfulfilled, so its quite hard to give an over all score.
The beginning of the book was very enticimg. I enjoyed the fairytale like setup, with an interesting female lead. The ideo of the wood being the anagonist was unique and magical.
as soon as our main character left for the city though the book started to loose me. I enjoyed some scenes, where ahe and Sakran met, or her encounters with other wizards.
The ending left me feeling unfullfilled sadly. I enjoyed the idea of Kasia more than her execution, which I sadly found to  be quite flat. I only really cared about our protagonist, the dragon and the wood.  Overall an enjoyable read but weaker twoards the second half.

“‘I'm glad,’ I said, with an effort, refusing to let my mouth close up with jealousy. It wasn't that I wanted a husband and a baby; I didn't, or rather, I only wanted them the way I wanted to live to a hundred someday, far off, never thinking about the particulars. But they meant life: she was living, and I wasn't.”

“They all had stories. They had mothers or fathers, sisters or lovers. They weren't alone in the world, mattering to no one but themselves. It seemed utterly wrong to treat them like pennies in a purse. I felt the soldiers understood perfectly well that we were making sums out of them-- this many safe to spend, this number too high, as if each one wasn't a whole man.”

This one of the best fantasy books I've read in a long time, and it represents everything that is right with fantasy writing. The descriptions are luscious but not overwhelming; the MC's voice comes strong and true; and there's a strong governmental and ecocritic _critique_ of the world and ours. Of course, the book is not perfect, but I couldn't put it down.
