I was rapt, Agnieszka is perfect

I love resolutions where the evil is more complex and is brought to peace rather than destroyed wholesale, especially with the ending of her coming into a kind of harmony with the forest in the end. But my favorite movie is Naussica of the Valley of the wind so this is obviously right up my alley

Damn you, Naomi Novik! Damn you for writing a book that was so impossible to put down that I essentially didn’t sleep for two nights. (And when I was trying to sleep, I was thinking of this story.)

As the NPR review says: “Clear your schedule before picking it up, because you won’t want to put it down.” If only I had taken that advice to heart!

This book has essentially the same plot as Spinning Silver (which I read 3 years ago in a similar December push to hit some reading goals!): a seemingly ordinary girl from an unimportant town in a mysterious fairy tale-like version of Eastern Europe gets taken by a disagreeable yet mysterious and sexy man with magical powers. She is trapped there until she figures out that she has autonomy and then she does grand things and we get follow her adventures as she figures out her new powers.

And yet, they are both individually compelling!

I actually liked this one more—I thought the world was explained a bit better. And I loved the juxtaposition of learned magic against folk magic — kind of like a wizard/sorcerer divide in D&D (5e).

If you want a strict magic system and deep character development, this is not for you. If you want a compelling story with a delightful female protagonist, a satisfying ending, and, as Patrick Rothfuss put it perfectly, “some old world magic and the flavor of a dark faerie story,” then this is the book for you.

But seriously, clear your schedule.

had me in the first third, lost me at court, got me back in the end. lovely aesthetic and pretty ending. very cute friendship.
