3.5/5

Pretty slow paced at the beginning, but with compelling enough characters and backdrops that it moves you through the exposition fairly easily. Best read in the fall, I think; it’s a very cozy fantasy, despite its darkness.

Mmmmm, what to write ?
I rather enjoyed the first part of this novel, the magic related to nature, the way Nieshka had her own way of handling magic, but mostly I loved that the (main) villain of the story was... woods !
Now, I kept wondering why Dragon (he's no dragon, he's a sorcerer) chose her : he really wanted to try something new or did he feel her latent magic ? It doesn't seem to be the case but it's one hell of a coincidence. Because Nieshka learns fast, very fast, surprising everyone.
I didn't really like Dragon, always gruff, saying barbs, I know he's not a social person (neither am I), but all the same, too insulting. I was surprised at the romance, I wondered where it came from and if it didn't come from them both using magic together ? I didn't feel it anyway.
I liked Nieshka, a bit too keen to dirty herself at the first occasion, but smart and brave. I didn't completely feel the friendship between her and Kasia. They grew up together, but as we didn't see that, we only see them together after... that thing, when everything's changed.
Mostly, I didn't like the second part, when we get the king, princes, court and the fast-paced action.
So I moderately liked the book, well the first part, I liked the heroin, but I mostly loved the evil woods... I even liked the way the problem was solved at the end.

3.5 stars

what I liked:
- the setting/worldbuilding
- the idea behind the story
- the writing

what I didn't like as much:
- pacing: can be a little slow at most parts
- plot was interesting (to me, but only because I liked folk/fairytales, which some people might not and thus feel bored?) but fell a bit flat in the end (the most important parts were packed into the last 70 to 100 pages of the book); sometimes confusing; unnecessarily long descriptions of battle without much value add to the story
- not sure if I like Agniezka or Sarkan, I think more of the book should have been dedicated to characterisation, especially for Sarkan; didn't feel like their relationship developed a lot either

overall not bad!! started off well and strong and intriguing but kind of tapered off towards the end
