This was a first rate crime thriller, similar in style to ones written by John Sanford (Lucas Davenport series) or the Marshall Karp/James Patterson NYPD Red series. Well written, great plot, good pacing. About the only thing that dropped it a notch in my mind was unnecessarily graphic sexual content, which I could have done without.

Recommended by a Facebook friend, thanks. Good police procedural murder mystery. A bit rough but fast read, good fr train or plane rides. Set in Maine which is why I tried d it. Might try another of his when I'm in the mood.

Since the book takes place in my backyard, I was curious to read it. As a first novel, I enjoyed the writing and found the character development (at least the main characters) well done. It's clear the author was influenced by many popular mystery/crime writers and this can be seen in his characters and the plot (Is it me or is it a prerequisite that the male protagonist be attractive and have a sexy significant other who is always ready for some action between the sheets and has fabulous taste in food and drink and/or is a classical music/literature fan?) The action moved well and while I did figure out the killer early on, it was still enjoyable to continue reading to see how it would be revealed. I understand a second book is being written and I look forward to reading that to find out what happens with the characters.

This book is very imaginative and creative. I always seem to be enthralled with books about serial killers. This one is really good, but not great. Maybe I have been spoiled by some I have read in the past and was expecting something similar.

The plot and events in this book are very well written for the reader. It is easy to follow. However, its drawback is its lack of interest. What I mean is, I had a hard time concentrating on it. It was either catching your attention or boring you. It would get really great in parts then die down to almost being dull then back up. That made it really hard to read from start to finish.

Overall, if you are an avid reader of this genre, you may really enjoy this book. The characters are likable and portrayed just right. Their interactions are well-written for the most part. And the suspense and details of the murders are written very descriptively!

Detective Sergeant Michael McCabe is trying to get settled with his new life in Portland, Maine with his daughter. Detective McCabe has barely been in town and already he is on a hot case. There is a serial killer on the loose. Two women have already gone missing. One has been found with her heart cut out. This is not just any serial killer. This killer kills with precision of a surgical hand.

It is up to Detective McCabe and his partner, Maggie Savage to bring down the killer before the body count gets too high.

The Cutting is author, James Hayman’s first novel. The first few pages of this book really grabbed my attention. Detective McCabe seemed like a pretty straight arrow. It was nice to see that he was human and had to deal with family issues amongst trying to stop a serial killer. For me the wished the serial killer was more prominent in this story. When the story line would flash to the serial killer the parts were too short. I wanted more. Also, there were a few times in the middle where I would lose some interest but than the story line would pick up speed again and I would jump right back into this book. Overall, this book did leave me willing to check out his next novel.

it felt unnecessarily violent. I may just not have been in the right headspace for it, but I wasn't enjoying it at all and was forcing myself to continue, so figured it was best to put my energy towards more positive content. I also was not invested in the characters, etc. yet

This is the first in a series featuring Mike McCabe and the city of Portland, Maine. While the book starts out a little slow, it really finishes with a heartpounding bang. Lots of blood, sex and violence and NO harping about the quaint Maine accent, thank God. I look forward to watching McCabe and his partner Maggie Savage evolve in future books.
