That. Ending. Though. Holy fucking shit. Such a good book. This was the dystopia I've been waiting for. It was an excellent read, interesting to get into and honestly incredibly possible "new world order."
I was planning on three stars for most of the book, but had to give an extra star for the plot twist at the end that literally made my jaw drop. In intrigued enough to read more!
Yuck. Such a poorly written book, and a clone of a million other poorly written dystopian teen novels. When a found letter tells you all the information you’ve been wondering about so you can wrap up the book, it’s just bad, lazy storytelling. I would not have finished this had I not been previewing it for middle-School appropriateness (verdict: pretty iffy. Nothing graphic but some serious aggression against women, a near rape, and a hot and heavy scene that I assume will continue on and be more graphic in subsequent books)
I took a while to warm to Violet and to get into the book but by the end I was gripped and immediately downloaded the next in the series!
This book was suggested to me on Goodreads since I liked The Hunger Games. From the title, you would think it was similar, but it isn't really. It is a dystopian novel (see what I mean about relevancy?), but it feels really current. Society is separated into two parts: a Matriarchal society founded on peace, and a Patriarchal society, who has a violence-obsessed ruler.
It is very clear that both societies have flaws, and the main character Violet has lots of flaws too. I can't wait to continue her story with the next book in this series.

I went into this book completely blind as to people’s opinions of it. I saw it pop up in an ad and thought the premise was interesting so I went for it. The storyline at times was fairly weak (come on, an egg? Really?) and the long drawn out descriptions of mma fighting got dull after a while, but the characters are interesting and the ending sets up a very interesting plot for the next books. I will continue to read the series if not just to find out what happens.
Good story, interesting concept. I had issues with some of it not being explained well or making sense, but overall I liked it enough to finish the series. Hated Lee from the beginning.
Didn’t expect the twist at the end. Four stars for that :)
I am conflicted when it comes to concluding an opinion on this novel; although I loved the concept and the character of Violet, I believe that there were some plot holes, especially at the end that did not intrigue me enough to continue reading, especially with the amount of novels in the series. However, it was a good read, I just wish that there was slightly more depth.
Interesting read dealing with stereotypes of fitting the mold. I was sucked in and I couldn't get out-- although I wasn't expecting the relationships to develop as they did.
