There's so much potential behind the concept of this story, but I feel like so much of it was left unexplored or simply unaddressed. "Gender" has become such an intricate word today, and if you're going to base an entire book series on it, I think you need to take into consideration all it can mean, and all you can do with it. While the story and characters were entertaining enough, they follow tropes that we've seen many times, so this "new world" of "opposing genders" the author created didn't end up feeling very new or different at all. There was much left to be desired. I will say that the twist at the end is very nice and was pretty unexpected, and that's always refreshing to experience.
This was an OK read full on promise but I can't say it delivered on everything. For me I felt like the main character brought a lot of the problems on herself on purpose.
The main character is Violet, a girl in a society where males and females rule different parts of the world. Violet has a plan though, since her younger brother went missing she has been in and out of prisons and juvinile detention centres and now she has been sentenced to death. She needs to find a way to escape and the opportunity comes when she gets the chance to enter the male ruled part of the land and submit herself to become the property of a male.
There were some secondary characters but I think they weren't properly explored.
The storyline was full of great potential but the pacing was slow so I don't think all the possibilities were explored. I think I will probably reread this at a later date though before I decide to continue with the rest of the series or not.

Meh! The writing is elementary and descriptions poor. (why does everyone have black hair?) At times the plot drags on and at times it picks up, but then dries up. Overall it's just boring. It's clear the author did no research on explosives, labs, societies that suppress women, etc. It lacks believability and imagination.
I love a well written dystopian novel. This was not it.

I really disliked all of the characters in this book. A lot. The premise was so interesting that I kept reading, wondering how it would all play out, but it was a LONG slog through this book. I have read other similar books with similar tropes and enjoyed them much more - the worst part of this was that I couldn't stand the main character. She was often stupid reckless instead of daring or brave reckless, and I couldn't stand her. The main love interest was kind of bland, too, and I didn't really care a ton about him, either. The twist at the end was interesting, but after feeling like I wasted hours reading this, I chose not to continue the series.
The writing is not great, but the story is unique. I love the whole dystopian society thing and this spin on an all-male vs. all-female city is very interesting. The main character is foolish, though. She got herself into way too many pickles and never should have survived. BUT since she did (obviously- there’s like 9 of these books), I’ll probably read the next one.
Couldn't put it down! A unique cross between Divergent and Hunger Games. I was shocked and excited to see that there are 6 more books in the series. Can't wait to read book 2!
