I can't remember why I bought this book but the blurb was intriguing, the reviews were good, so I picked it up.
In this book, Elle rents out her house on Air Bnb and then comes back to find everything subtly different. Things moved behind locked doors, things taken out of place, books written in and there's nothing concrete to point to. Elle thinks it might be her imagination running away from her but things start to get a lot more sinister.
This book had everything you want from a thriller, a varied range of characters, a main character you could root for even if she wasn't completely likeable all the time, a twist ending that you could have seen coming if you had picked up the clues - but it just didn't grab me. I appreciated it as a book and I liked the ending, especially the conclusion to one of the mysterieswhere we find Elle didn't make a false rape accusation but everyone thought she did because I was so expecting it to go the other way and was so glad it didn't. Also the epilogue where Fiona stole her book and published it, therefore leaving the two of them with secrets to hold over the other was something I really liked because it didn't just leave us hanging like a lot of thrillers do. We got to see how the main character coped with the revelations of the last couple of chapters and how she has changed as a person because of it.
This is one I would recommend but it just didn't strike me. If I hadn't been reading it for a reading challenge, I think I would have stopped at about 30% and probably not picked it up again.
3 stars!

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Elle Fielding is an author who is trying to write her second book with her first being a best seller. She is persuaded to let out her newly renovated house with stunning sea views as an airbnb. When she gets home she notices little things out of place. She is unnerved by little things that she finds and is certain somebody is trying to dig into her past. It is hard however for her to persuade anybody else that it is not all in her head.
I did really enjoy this book and the tension was built up so well. At one point a door slams and just as I was reading it a door slammed in my own house and I jumped out of my skin. There are quite a few suspects in this story as to who is behind what is going on in the house. I guessed quite early on. I was also screaming at the main character who is an author to backup her work. I am still not sure about the ending but it was different to what I was expecting.

This book has some great reviews but it just didn't click with me... I found it slow and repetitive, and I was bored most of the time, but I wanted to get to the end hoping to change my mind. I must admit the ending was unexpected and that made the book earn an extra star. I will give the author another go though, as the story was beautifully written.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I’m not a fan of books about authors, but Elle was a relatable character, for me anyway! I loved the sections of writing where she talked about a blank page, about the writer’s block she was suffering, the pressures of deadlines etc. I found it all believable and relatable.
I didn’t see the twist coming although I did guess who was behind it all. Great book, really enjoyed it.

Elle has the life many writers dream of - a bestselling debut novel in international languages, a deal for a second book and a wonderful clifftop house in Cornwall with a beautiful writer's room. But not all is idyllic as it seems, and when Elle comes back from a summer in France, she starts feeling like she's not alone as she thinks in her empty house, and old fears and memories come back to haunt her.
I found You Let Me In an extremely atmospheric, creepy read and felt really sucked in after a few chapters. Elle isn't a particularly likable character and does come across quite cold, and almost uppity at times but I liked that she was also an author and I did wonder if some of her thoughts and frustrations with her writing was an exaggerated reflection of Lucy Clarke's - particularly when it came to the pressures of follow-up novels after such a successful debut.
There seemed to be a lot to uncover with this story, and Elle was definitely a character with a lot of secrets, all of which were revealed one by one. If I could describe this book with a colour, it would definitely be a misty gray - I don't know if it was just the subtle creepiness of potentially Elle not being alone in her house, the description of her home or the cliffside/beach setting.
I definitely guessed some things that happened in this book but not all, and I did find the twist and reveal pretty entertaining.

Lucy Clarke is definitely an author that has a firm place in my most favourite authors list. The only one left I have to read is Last Seen and I can' wait to dig into that one.
We follow Elle in this story. She has just come back from being away for one or two weeks to her reasonably newly built house that she has been renting out while she has been away. But there's something not quite right with the house and this is a feeling that she has right from when she steps through the door. It seems that someone may be watching here or even in her house, both when she's not there and even possibly when she is. Is she going mad or is there really someone out to get her? But it is not only Elle's point of view we read in this story. This story is split into two viewpoints, one, of course, is Elle's but the other could be the person who is watching her...
This book kept me right at the end of my seat the whole way through. There are a vast array of characters that are featured in this book including next door neighbours, next door neighbour's son, her sister and brother-in-law. Also, you have the family who rented the house while Elle was away. All of them suspects...
Despite the fact that I had figured out what was happening about near the middle of the book, this was such an enjoyable read. Full of suspense, twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat!!!
