Mercury Striking was such a fascinating and intriguing story. The world building was scary and amazing at the same time. The chemistry between Lynne and Jax was off the charts from the first moment they met.

There was something that really bothered me that happened kinda early on in the book, which is preventing me from giving it 5 stars. I can sorta see why it happened, I just did not like it at all.

But other than that, I really enjoyed this book! It was my first Rebecca Zanetti book, but will not be my last. I've already preordered book 2 and am really looking forward to learning Raze and Vivienne's story!

Lynne Harmony has a blue heart(a side effect of a drug they tested to see if it could counteract the infection) and used to be the head of the CDC before the world collapsed under the Scorpius bacterium, which on the very slim chance you survive, it changes you sometimes making you smarter, sometimes making you feral, or maybe a serial killer because it attacks the part of the brain that controls empathy.
Lynne is hiding and looking for a cure so she makes her way to L.A. looking for a secret lab and a man called Jax Mercury who she thinks she can convince to protect her. Jax is a soldier and the head of a group of approx 500 survivors(some who've survived infection and some who haven't been infected) that he is trying to train to help fight, scavenge, etc. The side characters are also interesting.
There are gang wars, scavenging, science and sexy times in here and it was an interesting read, better than I expected actually after reading the prequel first and only being kinda interested in the story.

It is an interesting, intriguing and full of action read. A solid start to what is gearing up to be an amazing series. I cannot wait to read the next book, Shadow Falling.

description

I started this book right after it got released but around 50% I stopped reading because I was in the mood for a different genre. Last week when I was in a book funk I decided to finish reading Mercury Striking and I am glad I did. ADULT Dystopian romance is one of my favorite genres, and I know there aren't a lot of adult dystopian romance books out there so I am always happy when I discover a new book. I have read books by Rebecca Zanetti before, I adore her Dark Protectors series. So it was kind of a no-brainer for me to give this book a try.

I love the world the author has created in this book. It had the right amount of romance and action in it. I don't like it when one overpowers the other in dystopian books. Jax is definitely an alpha male who is tough and also very protective of the people around him. Lynn is a strong character who has been through a lot and she is still in danger but that doesn't stop her from fighting back.

I am very excited for the next book in this series. We meet both main characters in Mercury Striking and I am intrigued by their stories. I definitely want to know more.

Mercury Striking is a very powerful dystopia suspense novel, where most technology is down, and what is left of humanity is fighting against a horrible bacteria for survival.

Mercury Striking
5 Stars

In a world in which humanity has been decimated by a deadly virus, people have found safety in numbers. One group in Los Angeles is led by former special forces soldier, Jax Mercury, who has a reputation as not being someone to mess with. This is precisely what draws Lynn Harmony to him. On the run from those who blame her for the epidemic as well as those who believe she can cure it, Lynn seeks refuge with Mercury, but soon comes to realize that he has the power to either save or betray her. Which will it be?

Zanetti skillfully immerses the reader into a harsh post-apocalyptic world in which a handful of survivors must deal with the fallout both of a horrific disease as well as rival gangs in competition for the same meager resources. Add in rampaging zombie-like creatures and a government run amok, and you have a recipe for success.

The cast of characters both primary and secondary are very appealing. Lynn is an intelligent and resilient heroine who has overcome numerous obstacles to find Jax and the hope that he represents. Jax is a typical alpha male with trust and intimacy issues, but this conceals a fundamentally good man who cares about others. Some readers may be turned off by his domineering attitude toward the heroine, but anyone who's read Kristen Ashley will recognize this behavior for what it is - fear of caring too much.

The romance starts out as two lonely people in desperate need of human contact. However, the physical intimacy slowly grows into an emotional connection as Lynn and Jax learn to love and trust each other.

The next two books in the trilogy focus on two of the other fighters from Jax's ragtag group. Each man has his own demons to fight and it will be interesting to see how the ongoing plot surrounding the contagion and government corruption will develop.

All in all, an excellent start to a new series with fascinating and detailed world building, irresistible characters and a scorching hot romance. What's not to love?

Not greatly written. I kept reading hoping there would be more zombie action but it was mostly romance.
