It's rare when I think both the hero and the heroine are too immature to be together, but Harrison and Maddie really are that couple you hope is going to break up next week. I'm not generally a fan of childhood friends to lovers and that dislike was only furthered by Harrison's horrible, slimy attitude toward getting anything he wanted, damn the consequences. Maddie is an okay character, but lacks any real communication skills or ability to go head to head with Harrison.

From any other author I’d probably give this a solid four but I have come to expect so much more from Joanna. The MCs in Heiress Hunt are maddeningly obtuse and the drama of this plot is driven by Harrison (the MMC) lying quite a bit and I hate that in general.

I also felt that there were several missed opportunities to make this book more exciting/ratchet up the pining and teamwork between the MCs, and that fell flat for me. If Harrison had included Maddie in his plotting against his family, I think his plot line would have been so much more exciting. There were jumps in the action I would have like to see and details added during some of the calmer times that I didn’t care as much about.

Needless to say, I enjoyed it and it’s not a BAD book, I just know Queen Shupe can do way better. I’m excited for the rest of the series!

Mixed feelings about this one. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, especially the first 50%. The hero, however, drove me crazy. He's supposed to be the bad boy second son who mysteriously fled to Paris for wild living and returns to find a wife. The heroine, his childhood friend, agrees to host a house party full of eligible ladies. It's no secret that I love a house party where things go wrong. Of course, he only agrees to come to woo her.
Problem is that she gets engaged to a duke at this house party, which of course our "hero" ignores and seduces her anyways. Even though they don't go all the way, her engagement is broken and she is forced to marry him. He confesses his deceptive behavior to her and it seems like things are on the mend. Wedding night is delightfully steamy. But he continues to hide things from her and this continues throughout the book even though she repeatedly calls him out, he makes up, and then it starts all over again. He's very heavy handed with trying to protect her and do what's "best" for her without even asking her, and that's a big red flag for me. Also, he's super focused on ruining his family who hurt him in the past even though it will endanger her and isn't transparent with her about it. So, good book overall, just a bad "hero" who I kept hoping would undergo some character growth for the better but never really did. Loved the tennis-playing heroine and I'm excited to read more in the series as several of the secondary characters could make for great heroes and heroines.

Overall, this was fun - it stayed relatively light, the plot moved quickly, and it was a pretty fast read. That said, it felt like the plot kept building up to dramatic events to build tension and allude to future drama, but then nothing really ever came of the build-up. It felt like something bad was constantly looming, and yet it never came, which led to a weird sense of being let down when the plot kept resolving itself relatively neatly.

I also didn't entirely buy the romance plot between Maddie and Harrison. As I was reading, I never got the sense that Maddie was actually falling in love with Harrison--they have a strong sexual connection after he returns from Paris, and they've had years of platonic love, but I never felt like Maddie actually pivoted to romantic love, or anything other lust for Harrison. He also never seemed to actually respect her as a partner, and continued to orchestrate their lives to get what he wanted.
Although Maddie calls him on it, I didn't think he actually demonstrated at the end that he was ready to change. He was all too ready to leave for me to trust him as a good partner for Maddie.

Also, there's a small cheating plot. It didn't last for long, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, personally.
