Close Your Eyes and Count to 10 focuses on an extreme challenge, the opportunity to hide on a remote island for the opportunity to win a life-changing sum of money. Unfortunately, someone sees this as the perfect opportunity to get their own back and to make Mav, the face of the company running the challenge, pay for his perceived wrongs.
One of our main characters - and perhaps the one we’re most invested in - is mother of two, Adele, who’s raising her profile as she turns her life round after it’s discovered that her husband is on the run for fraud. Wild Cody used to be a big name, but a couple of poor decisions have left his public profile sinking. And influencer Maliki gained fame for her mountaineering exploits as a child, though there is talk of her stock being in trouble.
The book opens by introducing us to the large cast of characters and getting them to the island. The description of their mysterious base is suitably chilling. But when a tropical storm arrives the game becomes real. It isn’t long before we realise that not everyone will make it out alive.
While this was entertaining in part, nothing really came as a shock. It was hard to feel upset on behalf of characters you’re not that invested in, and the ending was not quite the dramatic finale I was hoping for.
