I am a huge fan on Nicholas Sparks' books(this is my 10th book) and to this day he never disappointed me. It is hard to say which book is the best, because they all are great in their own way. I enjoyed "Message in a Bottle" because of the love story, which is by far very heart-breaking but also magnificent. What would be the chance of finding a message in bottle and then its writer? Not that high. The love story itself is wonderful, one that you can only dream of happening to you . As you find out in the blurb, Garrett has lost his wife, wrote a letter to her, threw the letter in the ocean, Theresa found it, found Garrett afterwards and they fell in love. It would not have been a great novel, if Garrett would have just let go of his past when he fell in love with Theresa. It is very realistic that he could not give up on the love for Catherine. Oh, Garrett...

There are no words to fully describe how wonderful he is. A gentleman, loves with all his heart and a great cook ;)
I also found Theresa's way of living and thinking incredible, because I could easily find myself in her words.
The only mistake I have done was to watch the movie before reading the book. Although it was 3-4 years ago, I still remember how the story went. Even in that situation the book took me by surprise at times, because it is quite different from the movie. All in all I really enjoyed the book and definitely recommend it as it is worth reading.

except the part where Garrett dies, which I wish for no one to experience

Like most of the stories written by Sparks, I got really frustrated when Theresa kept quite about how she found Garrett(which he finds out later be himself). Although I think I would have done the same, since I would not have known how to explain it to him. Which brings me to next thing I really liked about the book. The only mistake I have done was to watch the movie before reading the book. “True love is rare, and it's the only thing that gives life real meaning.”
I read this book when I was in tenth grade, when romance novels, especially, Nicholas Sparks' novels were considered the best. And, instantly, I fell in love. The way this story is narrated, they way these characters are introduced and the way Garret and Theresa finds each other and fall in love is very beautiful.
Definitely recommended to all those who love romance!

well as you should all now most of [a:Nicholas Sparks|2345|Nicholas Sparks|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1332884095p2/2345.jpg] books have a pretty sad or just to say a not happy ending!... i had this book for a while and i really did not want to read it because i knew i would cry but then finally i got into the mood and of course i cried especially at the ending. The story is really good i liked it at the beggining the story caught me and i really felt emotional though all the book i really wanted for them to be happy, for the male character to finally feel good and for his suffering to end but then of course the ending was nothing like that. The ending was kind of what i expected being a Nicholas Sparks novel but I really wished it was different after falling in love with their sotry. Afer reading around 4 or 5 book from Nicholas Sparks i dont know if i want to keep reading them. For me the whole purpose of reading romances books is because they get to be happy at the end and you are relieved that they made it after all but then noo!... they usually died or not meant to be :( i liked the book but i dont like the feeling of being depress when i finish reading them.
I’m 90% sure I’ve read this book before, but I have to say that it’s a sad one. Although the story keeps you interested, waiting to see the outcome of Garrett and Theresa’s relationship that blossoms.
Spoiler Alert:
Unfortunately, that happy ending doesn’t come. But instead a beautiful full circle life lesson. She taught him something that she would later need to learn herself.
In the end, a really sweet story. Not your typical happily ever after Sparks novel.

Another one of Sparks' best books. This one was a little more unpredictable and again - tons better than the lame movie. Another great love story.
It was enjoyable, but not one of my favourites.
Cringe.
Soul mates fall in love at first sight, have synchronized orgasms, and make up some problems to whine about. Then he dies.

Nicholas Sparks. Anybody who hasn't heard his name has been living under puddle of magma that eventually cooled into a metamorphic rock which then underwent a series of alternating phases of cooling and heating and became an igneous rock which then(!) proceeded to suffer through intense weathering and erosion forming tiny rock particles that eventually cemented into a small sedimentary rock. This process, of course, spans several hundred/thousand years. (Okay just reread that, makes no sense but my point is, I don't have a point.)

Eh, it was all right. The prologue was written well. I was really excited to continue reading. Seriously, I wouldn't have minded if the whole book was just the prologue. I would've liked it better.
But seriously, no. This whole novel was no. Wayyy too contrived. Sparks could not for the life of his pet rock make me sympathize with the characters. I didn't like them. I didn't feel sorry for them. And I didn't root for them.
Clearly, every word was carefully chosen to get a certain reaction out of the reader, to build up the relationship between Theresa and Garrett. It was manipulation, and in a way, that's what writing is. But, the fact of the matter was that it was so clearly blatant. The ending. I was so frustrated. I didn't even care about the characters but, really? That was such an awful ending I wanted to throw my book. I didn't even feel an ounce of sadness. And that's saying something! I'm a crying machine, I empathize with everyone and their freaking grandma's dog!
But nope. Nothing. Just frustration that I read the whole book and I felt cheated. Not that bad endings are bad, but I didn't even connect with these characters. So to see it end like that was like a disappointment, although I was relieved it was over.
A) Theresa? Her relationship with her kid was confusing. Although she said she cared about Garrett, I think Sparks falls short in showing that besides a few times. One second he's in the back of her mind, the next he's the reason she can't move in with Garrett? Too bad he's 12 and has plenty of time to adjust to new surroundings. Garrett had clearly taken a big step to discuss their relationship and she did not even try to compromise. She just refused! Way to give and take. Especially given his inner turmoil.
Which leads me to their relationship. Sex the second day they've met. For people who haven't been with anyone horizontally, that was a little unrealistic. If he had such a hard time getting over Catherine, how could he just accept someone so easily and intimately? And clearly they both thought sex was intimate. Their relationship just progressed too fast to be believable. And, OH MY SATAN. Their conversations? So. Boring. Do people really talk like that? They really only talked about themselves in the most mundane ways, clearly only to reveal insight to their past/ sometimes their feelings. Either way, it was so obviously only a way to get the plot moving and it felt forced. I don't know how they fell in love because their conversations were so awkward to read. They did not show their personalities. Both Theresa and Garrett were flat and dry. I don't know what they were like. Which is disappointing because Sparks had over 300 pages to show me.
But, to be fair, the premise was interesting. Nicholas knows how to write, and there is a reason he's so famous, but in short-- not my cup of tea. :)

I really liked this book, although I do feel there could have been slightly more to it. Also, I cried so hard at the end.
This is a delightful story with a sad ending. I love Nicholas Sparks and this is actually my least favorite of all his books I've read so far. Still I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a touching love story. And if you haven't seen the movie -- don't. Its a pale comparison to the book.
