3.5

What a switch I saw the movie first then read the book. I liked the book better & kept thinking why did they change that in the movie. As always the book was so much better.

This book was really good. I love Nicholas Sparks' books. This one is underrated, I think. It's not as popular as The Notebook or Dear John, but it's sooo good. I liked the storyline a lot. I didn't know how sad the inspiration for this book was, though which makes me look at this book in a new light. I thought the book was well-written. I liked the ending. Of course, I cried like a baby. This book took me on a rollercoaster ride with my emotions and I highly recommend reading it.

The first word I thought to describe this book was: gooey... yup, gooey, not gushy or mushy BUT gooey. Absolute romantic sweetness that can be a bit much when you're not a lover of chick lits.

This is the third [a:Nicholas Sparks|2345|Nicholas Sparks|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1273850585p2/2345.jpg] book I've read and he has not failed in squeezing those tears from my heart. Theresa Osborne found a message in a bottle which touched her inner being. In fact, it gotten to her so bad, she really had to meet this person. The rest, you'd have to read for yourself.

I knew that it was going to be a tissue-box-next-to-you kinda book and 20 pages shy of the last page, it just clicked and I knew something was happening. YET... I resisted the tears and was feeling pretty proud of myself until... I hit the last 5 pages... **sigh** what can I say *shame-faced*? I just can't help myself!

The book was a tear-jerker. It was achingly beautiful. A must read.

The story is about Theresa Osbourne, a columnist of Boston Times, a single mom with a son, found a letter written by a mysterious man named Garrett addressing to a woman named Catherine. She was touched with the letter as written and she shared it with her friend Deanna, suggesting her to write a column about it. It stood out that she received a lot of responses. Until she realized it wasn't a coincidence she found this letter, she received another letter from different people that was written with the same man, Garrett.

She took an opportunity to find Garrett, at first they were both uncertain if they were really in love each other as Garrett couldn't get over his grief and longing for his wife's death. It was hard for a person to move on if he/she lost someone they truly love. It takes time to heal and learn to move on. Tragic ending, the last letter was so..........Oh well you need a box of tissue paper. I just love it!

I was able to finish this book with a blurred vision, red eyes, and the never-ending shedding of tears. It has become a habit of mine to prepare myself emotionally before reading any novel by Nicholas Sparks; simply because the outcome of his books are never as expected. It was impossible, however, to prepare myself for Message in a Bottle. It was truly the most heartwarming yet heartbreaking story I've read in a long time.

“There are winds of destiny that blow when we least expect them. Sometimes they gust with the fury of a hurricane, sometimes they barely fan one’s cheek. But the winds cannot be denied, bringing as they often do a future that is impossible to ignore.”

It's safe to say that Sparks's style of writing is one of a kind. His words are a melody to the ear and a beauty to the eye. A reader who does not understand or appreciate his writing is likely to discard his books and characters as meaningless. But when analyzed, his plots and characters are truly real.

Garrett, who lost his wife, Catherine, to an unfortunate event, has internal conflicts concerning his love for Catherine and his love for a new woman, Theresa, a divorced woman with a twelve year old son. The plot, the characters, and the circumstances were perfectly sculpted. Though they couldn't compare to the letters and messages in those bottles. I cannot begin to explain how beautiful those messages were. Little had I realized that I've fallen in love with Garrett as well. I've fallen in love with this book.

If you thought The Notebook was a tearjerker, you are in for much more with Message in a Bottle.

Not my favorite Nicholas Sparks book. I think I found the premise unrealistic. And I really didn't like the ending. But it was ok. It wasn't bad by any means, just not my favorite romance.

In some ways I want to just not comment on this but I can't help myself. My ereader was stolen, this was on the free hostel bookshelf, and I binge read it. I really hated the 'romantic' letters that were supposed to make you fall in love with the male protagonist and I thought it was emotionally manipulative in a lazy way. However, it was good at keeping you wrapped up in the relationship and the plot.
