DNF.

I thought I would give this book a try even though it's not one I would normally pick up. I couldn't make it more than about 1/3 through. I don't think I'm spoiling anything, because I didn't finish ...

I couldn't find anything to like about the main character. She frequently frustrated me with her choices. She clearly hated her job, but used her time travel ability to go back and fix something she did wrong. Why? She also used her power to "fix" her relationship problems. Again, why? He didn't want to be with her, but she was compelled to "make" him want to?

But I'm not a person to yuck somebody else's yum ... so this might be just the book for you. I just couldn't connect with the main character and couldn't force myself to go on.

Cassandra Dankworth is having a terrible day. She’s been fired from her job and her boyfriend has dumped her, but what really tips her over the edge is the lack of banana muffins in her favourite coffee shop. She knows that a meltdown is on its way and all she can do is ride it out, but afterwards, when she feels calmer, she realises she’s time-travelled to four months earlier. Now she has the chance to do everything differently to save both her job and her relationship - and as someone who has spent her entire life regulating her environment surely that will be easy!

Cassandra is an absolutely brilliant character and I completely fell in love with her. She’s someone who feels things deeply, so intensely in fact that she experiences emotions as colours spilling out of the person in front of her. She doesn’t always know what they mean or how to respond which sometimes ends up with her reaction being misunderstood. People can find her rude, awkward or self-centred but all she’s trying to do is make it through the day unscathed.

As the reader it’s clear that Cass is neurodivergent and Smale has done a brilliant job of portraying an autistic character without relying on stereotypes or tropes which have made for uncomfortable reading in other novels. I suspect a lot of people will relate to Cassandra because she’s an entire person and not a cliché, I felt like she was real and I’d love to be friends with her! As she time loops again and again she gains a deeper understanding of past encounters and conversations, with scenarios playing out differently each time which definitely resonated with my own tendency to overthink!

Cassandra’s mother installed a love of Greek Mythology in her and these classic stories are seamlessly peppered throughout the book which was so fun, unique and unexpected! The myths help Cass make sense of the world and the people she meets - Zeus, Circe, Aphrodite, they’re all in there and I completely applaud Smale’s ability to do this as it works brilliantly!

This book has absolutely stolen my heart and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s funny, heartwarming, uplifting and authentic ( ok, maybe with the exception of time travel) and Cass will stay with me for a long time.

4.5⭐️

A novel where, once again, it starts out quite hard to fall in step with the main character. But given the reveal that is now very understandable.

To any future readers I say give it a chance when our main character starts to slowly have realisations… you may have already fallen in love with her.

Pretty good but could have been much shorter. And the big reveal is kind of obvious the whole book.

Quite Entertaining

I quite enjoyed Cassandras story. Felt a bit like The Cactus / Eleanor Olephant meets the movies where dudes travel back in time to impress women.
