This was a really lovely little read. Not at all heavy, and fun.
Moderate: Death of parent
TL;DR: A man realizes he has let someone else’s prejudice keep him from making eyes at someone he really likes. A woman realizes the man who has always been an ass to her can apologize and since he’s hot…

I wasn’t so sure about this book in the very beginning, but I’m glad I stuck it out. The cast of characters truly grow on you & the world was SO unique & interesting! Mercy had some good character development, but Hart is the one that stole the show in that department. He was such a sad & lonely demigod when we first met him, and by the end he was a completely new person. Their romance was very cute & I loved the classic anonymous pen pal, hate, to romance trope.

This was a really slow and not good start for me, but in the end I would say I enjoyed it.
'The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy' is the first book in a series by Megan Bannen. Mercy has had to step to keep the family business Birdsall & Sons Undertaking going, putting her younger brother through school and supporting her father when he fell ill. She has learned to love so much of the business but she could do without a certain Marshall. Hart is a Marshall who works in the wild and magical land of Tanria. Putting up daily with dangerous conditions he finds himself alone too much and apart from humanity. On a night of sad loneliness he writes a letter to 'Friend' not knowing that it would be delivered to Mercy, who writes back and as the two share everything but their names and who they are they forge a deep connection. But can that connection last when the truth comes out?

I had the hardest time getting into this book. The world building didnt draw me in, the characters didnt enthral me. I just wasnt feeling it. Could have been the book or me. At some point I found myself engaged and wanting to know what happens. Mercy and Hart, through their cast of interesting side characters became real people. Mercy very much so, sacrificing everything for people that suddenly want to give her what they think she wants without talking to her, felt that plot line strongly. The romance had cute little moments and I think the two worked well together but I never really felt the spark or chemistry. It was a bit of a disconnect for me from their on paper relationship, which felt still platonic to jumping from hate to on top of one another in their physical relationship.
I think for me I didnt mind the too sugary sweet moments some of the funny moments were funny but others fell flat. It wasnt so much as cringey just not funny. What I think bugged me the most was the lack of info dump at the beginning. The world building was lacking for me in details, explanations, I felt like things were mentioned in passing and I was just expected to know that and to understand it. It was like picking up bread crumbs and trying to piece them together but missing all the pieces in the middle.
I probably won't continue this series.
