This is one of the few books where the movie was better. I can't stand useless white women who fall into hysteria over the safety of their kids. As much as I love a dystopian novel, I just wanted more from this book.

I was super excited to read this book because of all the hype around it and my god was it not worth the hype. Everything in this book is OVERLY DESCRIPTIVE. Wayyyyy too much for something written in 3rd person. Also I feel like there was some scenes *cough, cough* that could have definitely been left out.
I don’t recommend unless you’re looking for a super quick read or you’re watching the Netflix adaptation to compare it to.

i thought some parts of this were interesting, maybe the writing style wasn't for me. i also didn't like the ending it was getting good then ended lol.
Within the first 25 pages the preteen daughter’s weight was brought up twice, the son is skinny of course, but the little girl is maybe chubby? and was described as “jiggling” when she ran to the pool. Also within these 25 first pages, the book was nearly constantly unnecessarily sexual for no reason at all. Multiple times there was a sexual act done by one of the parents(either together or by themselves) right after thinking about or looking at their kids. That timing happening multiple times feels disgusting to me. Also together with the wife feeling sexual towards the bag boy at the grocery store even though she didn’t know if he was a teenager or an adult made me feel fucking gross. I’m done.
