It's a picture book reverso. Read it one way and feel your heart sink. Then read it the other way and feel your heart soar.

Clever way to introduce the idea of refugees and homelessness and generosity to kids without being heavyhanded

Wow! That was a very interesting book. Room On Our Rock is about how there is always two sides to a story. One half of the book is about how there is no room on the rock and that they need to go away, but then it says to read the story the other way. The second half is about how there is plenty of room and they will never say "Go away!". This would be a perfect story for a read-aloud to the entire class. I had a surprised reaction, so I can only imagine the reaction of children to the twist of the story. After the story, there could be a lesson on how there are two sides to every story.

I loved the idea of a book that can be read front to back or back to front with two very different messages. I remember a poem that I read when I was younger that did this (what was it called?! Do you know??), and the craft that it would take to create this, specifically well done and beautifully, is just mind blowing to me. On top of that the story and message of Room on our Rock is just so special.

Deze rots is van ons. Door: Kate en Jol Temple. Vertaling: Lisette Ma Neza. Tekeningen: Merel Eyckerman.

A beautiful story, that uses the form of poetry that can be read backwards as well as forwards, completely changing its meaning. I have looked at a number of these poems with my Stage 3 students, the best being Pretty Ugly by Abdullah Shoaib. This uses the same concept to share an important message, but I did feel the text was a little clunky at times. It will hopefully still be a revelation to those who haven't experienced this style of text before. The artwork is also gorgeous.

Similar to Reflections by Ann Jonas, but using words rather than pictures to create the back-to-front meaning.
