For: readers looking for a moving picture book about the life of the Chinese American artist who gave us Bambi.

Possible red flags: immigration and immigration issues; separation of parent and child; prejudice; not getting the credit where it's due.

Lovely book about Tyrus Wong, who created the beautiful background scenes for the Disney film, "Bambi". I had heard of him, but I didn't know much about him, so this book was a nice introduction. I also did not know that Wong passed away in 2016, so recently, and that he was over 100 years old!

I checked this out after it won the Asian/Pacific American picture book award at ALA 2021. It is a gorgeous book, and it led me to do more research on Tyrus Wong. Despite losing his job at Disney, he was very successful, especially with Hallmark. I found many articles about him and even a "CBS Sunday Morning" story about him, even a Google Doodle. I did recognize the picture of him in the watercolor advertisement. I wish the book had included more about his family. He was honored by Disney in 2001, and even had a PBS "American Masters" film made about him.

I did not know Tyrus Wong, and it was a great introduction to Chinese American history. I was familiar with the paper sons and daughters, but not really how it worked. It is a disgrace how such an artist did not get the credit he deserved. Great history lesson for the kids there!

I need more information about Tyrus Wong because this was just too little information! I appreciate the author's note and inclusion of photos at the end of the book.

Here's an artist you didn't know you needed to know about. Tyrus Wong immigrated to the United States as a child, using forged documentation to get around the Chinese Exclusion Act. He went on to become an influential artist who revolutionized the art for Disney's Bambi but was only credited as a "background artist". This wonderful picture book biography is a sure bet for young artists.

When Tyrus Wong arrived in America from Japan, he had to pretend to be part of a wealthy family, rehearsing and presenting all of their biographical details so that he could convince immigration officials that he belonged to this family, and was more than just a “paper son.” This picture book biography addresses the hardships and injustices that Asian immigrants faced, and shares about Wong’s artistic achievements, which included working for Disney and designing background animation for Bambi. The book emphasizes his hard work and accomplishments while also being direct and honest about the painful circumstances that he endured. This is best for elementary-aged students and older.
