last book of 2021.

the only bad thing in this book was not having any claudiagideon scenes when they start dating, like an epilogue would do just fine

Claudia begins her senior year at a luncheon with her much wealthier private all-girls school classmates, and when she slips off to the bathroom, she overhears the breakup of the it couple at school - Paige and Iris. Afterward, Claudia finds herself thrown together with Iris, a boy from the neighboring all-boys school, Gideon, and all the peers she’s always kept at arms length in schools’ joint production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The story revolves around Claudia’s experiences of friendship, love, heartbreak, and family.

I absolutely loved this story. I think I’m in love with Gideon and Claudia and Iris and Zoe and… well, everyone. This is one of those rare books where you really, truly just love all of the characters. Sure, they are flawed and they make massive mistakes and they hurt each other - sometimes accidentally and sometimes intentionally, but they are all just so believably human. I loved watching the friendships grow and be shaken and solidify. Iris’s heartbreak over Paige was so believable, and Claudia’s developing relationship with Gideon felt so authentic. All the friendships were so realistic and reliable. I just loved this book, and once I got into it, I didn’t want to put it down. So if you need a sweet and cute summer read, I’d highly recommend this one.

December 2017 Uppercase Book

The reason I gave this four stars instead of five was because of Claude and because I have no idea why Gideon likes Claude. She was a pretty bland MC. There were times when I wanted to like her and she had some good quotes, but overall, I thought she was very average. I guess that was the point of her character but it didn’t work for me.

I loved Iris and I understood why Iris liked Claude. I actually liked the Claude that she was when with Iris. Complicated, I know. Also I thought Gideon was great but again, why did he like Claude? The only conversations they had were ones where Claude said silly things and it seemed like he liked her for what she said but it never really made sense? I think his like was too quick, perhaps. There’s a part of me hat thinks maybe he liked her looks too.

But I did thoroughly enjoy the Battle Quest segments. I am so happy to know that authors are realizing how much gaming has impacted the younger generation. I found it silly that Claude had to explain it all to Gideon/Iris and essentially to the reader, but I am glad it was there.

Overall, I enjoyed the read.

With Famous in a Small Town releasing last week, it seemed like the best time to catch up on Emma Mills’ backlist. See, I had the pleasure of listening to First & Last on audio and haven’t been blessed with an audio since. I make the rare exception to my audio reading and pick up an ebook - with an author like Emma, it’s worth it!

Every author has the thing they bring to life better than anyone else and Emma Mills brings female friendships to life in Foolish Hearts in a way that’s just completely real.

When Claudia accidentally witnesses an epic breakup, the last thing she expects is to lead down a pathway toward friendship with the prickly half of the pair. The last thing Claudia thinks she needs is to be stuck with Iris. But stuck with Iris she is.

Iris is short, closed off, clearly she’s got some stuff keeping that tough exterior intact. Watching her and Claudia grow into a beautiful friendship is the true storyline and joy in this book.

Now, we can’t talk about this story without Gideon. He’s such a great book boyfriend. Funny. Kind. Well-rounded. He’s just a nice dude. Can we get more of those? He’s not broken. Just solid. The romance here is too sweet.

I appreciate that Emma Mills normalized female gaming and took it to another level by adding in connecting with distance family and friends via online gaming. Instead of teasing, some of the characters show interest in knowing more. So, thank you for that.

Foolish Hearts is one of those stories where the plot revolves around the characters so if you’re looking for a book with drama and action, you’re missing the point of the story. Friendship, relationships, and being a teen are the shining stars here!

phenomenal

Read the entire thing in one 3 hour sitting! Another super sweet romance by Emma Mills, who has officially become a will-always-read author for me. If you are looking for something light & fluffy, this one's for you.

This was such a cute book! It was a super quick read, but it was exactly what I needed. These characters weren't nearly as ridiculous as many I've read lately in YA contemporaries which is such a breath of fresh air.

Fun fact, I'm always nervous about reading a book with a character named Zoe, just because I'm worried it will be a stupid character and I'm stuck picturing myself in her place. This Zoe was awesome. She was funny, down-to-earth, and a good friend. Also, she was black, which I can relate to :p

Claudia can kind of act like an idiot at times, but it wasn't over-the-top and a constant thing throughout the book. Yes, she sometimes made bad choices and overreacted to things, but she's 17, what else is new? The thing I liked most about her is that she wasn't afraid to stand up for her friends, both when they're around and when they're not.

The love interest being named after a Harry Potter character (#spelleddifferently #hehaditfirst)? That may have a role in why this was a 5-star book for me.

I loved watching Iris grow as a person. I'm not going to say much about her so I don't spoil anything, but I think she's my favourite character.

It’s been so long since I binge read a book from start to finish, but I couldn’t stop reading this one! I read 75% last night and then finished the rest this morning after realizing it was super late, and I really needed to sleep. This one doesn’t have such a solid friend group as FIAST, but I love Claudia and her friendship with Zoe and the friends she makes through this book - Especially with Iris - and how that leads to a larger group. The romance with Gideon Prewitt was sweet and adorable. Previous heroes have been more Darcy like, but not Gideon. He’s hilarious, and the life of the party, and it’s so obvious how much he likes Claudia. It just takes her some time to realize it. I will read anything this author writes!

awww this was so adorable gideon prewitt is such a real man

SO CUTE. SO REAL. SO WONDERFUL.

This book really captured the things a teenager goes through. I really found the narrator, Claudia Wallace very likeable—she's witty, smart, funny, loving and sensitive. I'm also very happy that the story is not only about her, but also highlights the other people she has in her life from her best friend, Zoe to her older sister, Julia to her older brother, Alex to her newfound friends and to Gideon, her love interest.

Really, I think all characters in this book were plucked out from the crowd and were told they were going to be the subjects of a documentary. They were layered thanks to their interests and hobbies like music and gaming. They all were sweet and helped one another to grow and take things more seriously.

This was just a very cute read and I can't count how many times I giggled and laughed out loud while reading ☺️
