That was so, so, so sweet! Just want I love in a contemporary + more focus on friendships! I need to read me some Aa Midsummer Night’s Dream now! 💕💕💕

Trigger warnings: premature labour. I think that's it??

Okay so here's the thing: I put off reading this for months because I really hate this cover. I feel like I'd like it better in person that I do on the ebook edition? But yeah. No. Not a fan. Which is unfortunate, because I've loved both of Emma Mills' past covers.

Anyway. This one was a slow start for me. I liked the secondary characters almost straight away, but I wasn't initially a fan of Claudia. But she grew on me over time. I enjoyed the fact that it's set around a school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I loved that it features plenty of fangirling over boy bands and playing of online computer games.

Gideon is a precious little cinnamon roll and I love him, soggy cereal and all. He was honestly the highlight of this book for me, and I found myself smiling at the page multiple times.

Add in a healthy dose of strong families and strong friendships that exist outside of school, and this was generally delightful.

i loved this SO much it’s absolutely one of my new comfort books <3 i loved all of the characters so much and i would protect them all with my life

plus it reminded me a lot of the edge of seventeen which is one of my favorite comfort movies

Despite the large dose of cheese and a good hearty shake of predictability, I quite liked this!

Lots of good friends stories, some diversity. If cheese and predictability is your thing, would recommend.

4.5/5 stars - only because of when Claudia rejected Gideon's confession, it just broke me yeah. Also it was a stupid reason, and wasn't executed very well... I mean? Like? It's literally the only reason I'm cautious about contemporary ya. They always have to make some kind of trust issue so the protagonist can reject the love interest the first time but ends up realising it's totes fine to trust and happy ever after. Ugh. It bugs me so much.
But mannnn do I love this book. I love all the characters!!!! I love Claude, Zoe, Iris, Gideon, Noah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it is INSANELY FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't go reading two pages without laughing out loud :D The friendships, the diversity, the dialogue. All perfection (except for the thing I mentioned first, but with contemp ya, you just gotta deal with that).
And I could not force myself to put this book down. I started reading this last night and stayed up until 1am to finish it :')

Things I love about this book and Emma Mills' writing in general:

1. My favorite thing about Mills' stories is they are swoony and adorable (OH SO SWOONY AND ADORABLE), but the swoon comes secondary to familial or friend relationships. The characters' interactions with their families and friends are the most important storylines, and the relationships happen eventually, as they always do in YA romcoms, but they are usually a slow burn that take a backseat to everything else.

2. Her voice is so fantastically authentic and awesome. Her characters could be any of my students and I so wholly appreciate this about her books.

3. Claudia, much like Devon and Sloane, are smart, funny, strong and badass on their own, but understand they need other people to help them be that way. Mills' protagonists are very self-aware in a way that's not grating or frustrating. I think they're all girls I'd want in my classes or to be friends with my hypothetical daughters.

4. Oh Gideon. You adorable thing. I'm so glad Mills went in a different direction for her love interest in book 3. Gideon is goofy and kind and full of life, not broody and tragic like Ezra and Gabe. This is actually one of those YAs where I sort of wish was from his perspective. MORE MALE PROTAGONIST PERSPECTIVE YA ROMCOMS PLEASE!!

5. Shakespeare yaaaasssssss! I do love a good Shakespearean subplot in a YA.

In short, I will always love an Emma Mills book.

At an end of summer bash, Claudia finds herself trapped in a bathroom overhearing something she wasn't supposed to - a conversation involving one of the meanest girls in school. After unwillingly being partnered with the girl (and failing the group project) Claudia must audition for the school's play: A Midsummer Night's Dream. Although Claudia isn't thrilled about the play, meeting a cute boy and making new friends become unexpected perks.

Midsummer Night's Dream is my favorite play so when I heard that this book involved the play, I knew I had to pick it up. This book had me literally laughing out loud; it was such a funny, fun, and lighthearted read.Mills did a great job creating a great cast of characters and a plot that is engaging and fun. Nothing felt entirely unbelievable and the whole thing was overall really cute. If you're a fan of contemporaries featuring budding romances, new friendships, and character growth I highly recommend picking this up!

This was such a cute read. As a girl who did theatre in high school and college, I could really relate to this story. I cared about every single character and has me cheering for an encore. Great first read for 2018!
