"What are you doing?"
"I'm gonna shoot him," Iris replies simply.
"Iris! You can't just shoot players indiscriminately!"
"He dumped you; he deserves to die."
"That's--"
"In the context of the game," she amends. "His stupid character deserves death in the game."
mind if i love them both with all my heart?? this book has some of the BEST friendships between girls and i love it so much holy shit our main character is so supportive to all the girls she comes across and never slutshames or says a bad thing about them but always wants to help and oh my god just girls supporting girls is my kink
Guys, I'm so sad because there is no freaking way I can talk about how much I loved the fuck out of this book in one review. But I'm going to try. Because I NEED people to read this. If I had to describe this in two words, I'd say: heart-wrenchingly wholesome. You feel like you want to give the characters a hug some chapters and then you feel like they're hugging you back some other chapters and it's just all so freaking soft I can't even explain it.
"You forgive me?"
"Of course."
"Just like that?" she says. "It's that easy?"
"Sometimes. Sometimes not."
"But this time?"
"Yeah," I say. "It's that easy."
The plot itself isn't that crazy intense. This book is set over the course of a girl's school year where she has to sign up for the school's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and how she deals with things like friendship and just life itself. I loved every single interaction in this. The characters are always just trying to build each other up, you know? They make dumb mistakes. But they try to fix them. They try to be better. And isn't that all we can ask for?
-what ru doing up this early?
-Couldn't sleep. You?
-same. ru ok?
-no. you?
-no.
I loved our main character, Claudia, because she feels like someone I would know. I saw so much of myself and my bestfriends in her, and I kind of just want her to be my friend and hold my hand when I'm feeling sad. The friendships in this book are arguably the thing that make it so good, because the way they progress is one of the most natural things ever and you get attached to them as much as they grow attached to each other. It's about finding yourself in the people you want to love and being better than the mistakes you make and wanting to be better. That's the important part.
"You know those people where it's like, you know they could kill you, but it would be a privilege to die by their hand?"
side note: I LOVE IRIS SO MUCH what an iconic lesbian i want a spin-off with her as the main character immediately. i love how multidimensional she is, and how she slowly opens but stays true to herself. we understand more of her, but it's never that she was changed by having people who were nice to her. she didn't suddenly act like a wholly nice and different person, but she was trying to be more respectable and a little kinder and open to hearing other people's thoughts. she's flawed, but so were all of us. i love that you could see how much she grew.
"It'll be okay," Julia says.
"But everything's gonna change."
"That's not always a bad thing, is it?"
I absolutely loved the humor in this. It's exactly my humor, full of sarcasm and puns and stupid jokes I think are clever but everyone is like "Ellie, if you don't stop, I'm ending our friendship" but i love them and Claude gets me and Gideon gets me and they are both precious and I laughed out loud so much. Almost every interaction in this book is so wholesome that I couldn't stop smiling at my copy and i LOVE that a book gave me that feeling.
"Are you ready to put the 'fun' in Fall Fun Fest?" he says.
"I can at least put the 'trip' in 'Triple F.'" A pause. "By being clumsy, I mean. Not by, like, sharing drugs with the group." Three sets of eyes on me, and I can't stop myself from talking. "I don't have any drugs. In case you were worried. Or, in case you were . . . expecting me to have drugs . . ."
the characters, the story, everything made my heart go WHOOSH. I want to reread this immediately. just the atmosphere of it all makes you feel like you belong among these teenagers who are trying and you feel acknowledged because you're trying your best too and this book really captured that. i'm so happy i read this, finally.
"It's the best feeling. The first time. Why wouldn't you want to take something you love and go back to the very best part?"
"Maybe I like the part later on. Hearing a song so many times you know all the little ins and outs of it. Experiencing something so many times that you can just...live in it. Maybe I like that better."
// original review: this book is like the equivalent of eating a box of chocolates. there’s the good ones, the bad ones, and the ones that make you feel like your heart is bursting out of your chest because it can’t handle how happy you’re feeling. i would go through the experience of eating this box every single day for the rest of my life (as in, reread the book) because OH my god this was one of most heart-wrenchingly wholesome book where I loved every character. I didn’t want this to end ever???

I did not expect to love this as much as I did - I found all the characters so relatable, interesting and real which is often challenging when reading books set in high school, The plot was simple but in the best way and I genuinely got so attached to each character; I loved that even the “antagonist” characters weren’t painted as all bad. The depiction of high school was also realistic.
Skończyłam i było to coś bardzo uroczego! Już kinda tęsknię za bohaterami i obserwowaniem ich życia. Lekka książka, z którą przyjemnie spędza się czas. Polecam!
me reading this right after jellicoe road is such a set up for this book and myself. i like foolish heart though it was a very easy and light read, finished it in a day and all. so erm 3.75/5 maybe? claudiagideon's a 5/5 though
A really great read even for someone (like me) who has been feeling a little "too old" for the high school YA lately. I wish I had this book when I was in high school, so many relatable situations.
