The premise was great, but the execution left much to be desired. Perhaps it could have benefited from a second or third person narrative instead, and a more fleshy story (more description, more developed characters).
This book has been on my shelves for what seems like an absolute age - I reckon that I must have bought it around the time that the book came out in paperback, which I think was 2013 so this has been long awaited. And much like most of my read books list I picked this up as it fit the prompt in a readathon so it was good that this forced me into it.
I loved how this book utilised the photographs to tell the story, and how most of the photos were mainly unaltered so the writer must have done a helluva project to track them all down and work the story around them. To be honest the story was probably about a 3 star, but I bumped it up simply for originality (at the number of books that I read it is always a bonus to find a book that tells the story in different formats). But the reason for my lower rating is entirely down to me, and an acknowledgment that I am not overly fond of Middle Grade or YA fiction.
So overall I did enjoy the story, the plot, and the world that was created, but as ever with a YA I always want the story to go a bit further and deeper. But I think that teenage Jenny would have loved this, and I think that other YA readers would absolutely adore this series.

AHH!! It ended and I was totally not ready... I was expecting more adventure! Can't wait for the sequel to come out in 2013
Thanks to my grade 8 english teacher for recommending this wonderfully well written fantasy/horror book.
The summary was what it made me want to explore the extraordinary world of Jacob Portman. The characters are unique as well. I like how Ransom Riggs made these characters unique with each of them having different supernatural powers. The first time I saw the cover of this book, my mind was filled with curiosity like I don't know is it really scary like is this really horror as in like there's a ghost in there with a really pale face and killer looks? That's why you shouldn't judge a book cover or a book with a horror genre sometimes. Ahh and yes Jacob and Emma are one of my favorite OTPs even if they started in a terrible (but in a cute) way . I always wanted a book with different kinds of magical species/kinds in it. It’s not that trilling unlike the other horror novels, but I think it can make you think like you’re in an extraordinary place where your play mates have these awesome supernatural powers.

I was disappointed by this one. Maybe because I liked the cover so much, but also certainly because it seems like it's received a lot of hype this year. The peculiar children were really just caricatures, even the ones with larger roles weren't well-developed characters, which made it hard to care about what happened to them. There were a lot of good ideas here, I just think the author could have done a lot more with it.
As far as young adult fantasy books go, it was a good ride! I may or may not eventually read the rest

"I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was."
OH MY GOD! I never expected this book is as good as the cover. Honestly, I bought this book because the cover is fascinating. But when I opened it, I mesmerized by peculiar vintage photographs, and the peculiar story as well. I drifted by how Jacob's feeling when he struggles become 'normal' sixteen-year-old boy whom always had nightmares. And finally he realizes that he is peculiar as the children in Miss Peregrine's loop.
I can't wait for the next book because Riggs is already give sneak peek in the end-paper of the book.

Wow I started this in June. 5 months later I finish it. The story was good I felt it relied to heavily on the photos.
