This was incredibly enjoyable. The characters, for the most part, were very well fleshed out. A few of them were utterly forgettable, but that was to be expected. The pacing and atmosphere were amazing. This is a very slow book with a lot of buildup, and the climax and end were a bit dissatisfying to me.
This series is one of my favorites to this day. I plan to re-read them all soon! I used to get them every Christmas from my grandmother and I would save the next read for the next Christmas so she could buy it for me. It was something special she did so I just let her do it. Maybe we form bonds with others through our books too…. Anywhooooo. These books are beautifully written, every single one in the series. They awoke my imagination in so many ways and I wish I could be part of the peculiar world!
It was pretty good. As far as substance and quality of writing, this is more of a teen or preteen book than a book for adults. But some of the material might be deemed inappropriate for the younger teens/kids (there is a little bit of language and some kissing scenes, but nothing too over the top). The story was interesting and unique, albeit sometimes it moved a little slowly and some of the dialogue didn't seem very natural. Overall I would say it was "pretty good"
Did not like: the idea of 80-90 year olds acting like kids was an absolute nonsense

Wow! What unique and fantastical story! It's rare that I read YA books but when I saw the film adaptation I was intrigued. And guess what? The book is 10x better than the movie! Not surprising of course but I'm happy that I decided to read the story. Riggs' story telling is absolutely brilliant! And the photos! What a treasure they are! The photos make story come to life! Highly recommended!

Character
I wanted to like this more than I did. It has some similarities to seanan mcguires’ wayward children series, which I love, but fell short. For one thing the main character makes out with his grandpa’s ex girlfriend (timebending shananigians), which is just kinda gross. And the main characters parents are the worst and also so oblivious. It was a bit of a mental slog to get through some parts and I just wasn’t having fun reading it.
