3.5/5

Mostly interesting, but the narrative could have been much tighter

This was ok, just very repetitive.

I really wanted to love this book. What I did love was Atticus. I also loved the relationship between Tom and Atticus. I loved all of Tom's relationships with his dogs and his friends and Paige. But, for me, the hiking in the mountains and the politics of Newburyport just got too bogged down for me. It slowed things down and I found myself skimming over a lot of it. But the story of Tom and Atticus will continue to resonate with me for a long time.

This was a sweet book, and in the beginning I really enjoyed it. As it went on, it became repetitive, and it became more about bragging about how much better they were than experienced hikers, and how the fans of Atticus that they met on the mountain, diminished his joy of hiking.

This book chronicles the adventures of a writer living in a small town in New England and his dog. We learn about his life, his work, his finding of Atticus and how they got started hiking. I expected a sweet story that wouldn't stress me out (Since there was a dog on the cover, I did appropriate googling to find out whether or not I would be devastated or not before even cracking open the cover).

If this book had been shorter, and had some of the fat cut out, I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more. It is still a nice read though.

we don’t deserve dogs

HIGHLY recommend! It's been a while since I couldn't put a book down

This book, a true and extraordinary story, is about how two miniature schnauzers transformed the author’s life. There is adventure, setbacks and fear and also some heartbreaking personal histories. It’s read by the author, who has a distinct New England accent and starts very slowly, but stay with it. The sentimentality that infuses the book is old fashioned but even the most jaded are likely to feel their heart touched.

An amazing book. I laughed, I cried, couldn't put it down and yet wanted it never to end
