It was interesting to read a mystery set in India, it shows india at that time through the Europeans eyes, which show a certain perspective very different than that of the native Indian. The murder itself was not as interesting as the cultural and historical details set down by the author

A good solid read, set in India in the 1920s and featuring WWI vet and Scotland Yard detective Joe Sandilands. A few stretches (the Nancy and Joe subplot) but on the whole a diverting story briskly told. First in a series.

Well-done historical mystery set in early 1900s in India. A British "bobby" is sent to India to solve the mysterious deaths of wives of British Army Captains. Great atmosphere with last few twists really surprising.

Easy airplane read, with a bit more nuance than originally expected.

his book was absolutely mesmerizing. I had a hard time putting it down. Joe Sandilands is a Scotland Yard detective who is about to leave India after six months. Then he is called to investigate the horrible murder of an English woman, wife of an Army colonel. A friend of the woman's, Nancy Drummond, a young woman married to an older army officer whose important position is Collector, uses her influence with her uncle, a governor, to have him assigned to the task. Soon they are working together, and a romance is kindled. The book was a surprise in many ways - and not just when the murderer is finally revealed. This book was so evocative. I could see the images in my mind so vividly. I just loved it.
