This book would’ve been much better if the author didn’t infantilize her readers by using the “dinner party” gimmick. I wish she would’ve made the book more factual instead of insisting I was at a dinner party with historical figures. I enjoyed the facts I found in this book, but I did almost stop reading it due to the annoying gimmick.

this book has everything I love: history, frank discussion of sexuality, and statistics. however, I think James wanted to discuss more than she had the page count to do so; a lot of things were brought up in passing and not afforded the time or nuance that they should have received.

Kinky History by Esmé Louise James

Is tantalizing.

Many may know Esmé Louise James from her wonderful social media presence that talks about historical sexual facts. Kinky History puts many of these topics into one book.

It is completely sex based covering topics such as rimming, wanking, cuckolding, vibrators, queer sex, fetishes, oral, etc. None of it is in a chronological order but rather divided into Kinks, like Sin Kink, Pleasure Kink, Queer Kink, and Porn Kink. As such sometimes there’s backtracking, or revisiting of various works and historical/ scientific figures. But that builds the joy.

It’s amazingly interesting.

One thing I will say that is cute, but can be tedious is the ongoing “gag” that one is at a dinner party, with famous people that have some sort of impact on the discourse of sex. We go through courses of the meal from appetizers, after supper drinks, etc. It’s skippable. At times it was entertaining, other times I wasn’t really in the mood.

This book is for anyone interested in sex/sexuality history.

This book is extremely informative and helps shape an understanding of the origins and common myths is sex education topics. Each topic finishes in a way to encourage the reader to continue thinking about the topic or to start conversations with the people in their life. As someone who is not usually interested in reading history topics at times I was confused or was not familiar with the person or text being referenced but Esme did a great job providing a layman explanation where needed.
