I wish I had read this when I was around the narrator’s age. A coming-of-age story about growing up and no longer feeling the same way about things one had once considered very dear. I was not invested throughout the book as much I had hoped to be, but the ending, which made me tearful, made up for it.

"You are Annie John? We hear you are very bright." It was a good thing Miss Nelson walked in right then, for how would it have appeared if I had replied, "Yes, that is completely true" —the very thing that was on the tip of my tongue.

A quick and pleasant read following the more or less uneventful everyday life of a young girl in Antigua, I knew from the very first sentence Annie John would be memorable:

"For a short while during the year I was ten, I thought only people I did not know died."

The mother–daughter dynamic was the standout of this book for me. Through the inner feelings of our elegant yet mischievous protagonist, Kincaid reveals just how profound a mother’s influence can be on her daughter—from the reluctance to separate, to the inexplicable need to define herself outside of her mother’s shadow.

This is slower-paced but the poetic and lucid writing makes it linger in the mind long after finishing.

"If I had been asked to put into words why I felt this way, If I had been given years to reflect and come up with the words of why I felt this way, I would not have been able to come up with so much as the letter "A". I only knew that I felt the way I did, and that this feeling was the strongest thing in my life."
