You know what? I really enjoyed this! It's probably my favourite of the Julie Kagawa books I've read. The main character was awesome and the world was different to what I've read before and I can't wait to see what happens next!

allie made me laugh w/ some of her thoughts & actions. especially when she “sighed”.. idk why that was so funny, but it was. to me at least because you’re doing it on purpose & it’s just so dramatic lol.
- spoilers after this…
also um… i was a little shocked? i guess that ruth didn’t make it at the end. i thought it was a little sudden & was idk disappointed. i didn’t like her but wow… poor caleb yk.. & i also for some odd reason liked jackal… don’t hate me

This one ended up being not at all what I was expecting, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I am a big fan of the Iron Fey series, but this was nothing like the Iron Fey! I knew it was a vampire book and in this story the vampires are the leaders and humans are a source of blood, except for the humans who don't want to give blood - these humans are the scavengers, just trying to survive. The main character, Allie, is a scavenger who turns into a vampire. I guess I was expecting a bit of swoon and the romantic side of vampires, you know the sparkle-in-the-sun side and they don't really want to kill people. This book was nothing like that. It was gritty and tough and dirty. There were almost two stories, the first one being Allie before she was a vampire and the second one being Allie after she was a vampire. The first half was a bit slow going but then it changed into a page turner can't-wait-to-get-to-the-end. There was a lot of action, the characters were well developed and there was a little bit of swoon. One thing that really stands out for me is the way that Julie Kagawa writes... I was totally taken into the world, I could smell the smells, taste the tastes and feel what the characters were feeling... When Allie was going through the 'hunger', I could almost feel the same feelings (though maybe for hot chocolate, not human blood!). Allie was a great main character - tough, sweet, a bit witty and loyal..yes I have a small crush on her. I am looking forward to seeing her relationship with Zeke develop in the second book.
One thing I wasn't expecting, there were a lot of deaths, a lot of bloody deaths and the one thing that made me slightly nervous as I sat in the dark reading.. *whispers* , the rabids........ They still make me a bit nervous!
Another great series from Julie Kagawa.
Thanks to NetGalley for the book.

I loved this book the third time around! My copy is so beat up. I read this when I was 13 and I never really finished the series. I needed some comfort reading to get me through a reading slump, this for sure got me through it.
I care so much for the characters which is rare for me. While the romance may not be the best I've read, it certainly adds to the book.
The fast-paced nature of the plot is so addictive and suspenseful. I didn't remember all of the different scenes and problems, THERE'S SO MANY.
Kagawa is also not afraid to kill of characters which I love as well. While some things aren't likely, it's a YA paranormal, you got to suspend some disbelief.
I love Alison as a main character because she's imperfect and but also a pretty good hero. She chooses to be a vampire out of weakness and deals with the consequences.
Altogether I wholly enjoyed this again and I will be rereading for years. I will continue this series 100%.

3.75/5⭐️ This book was missing something and idk what. Maybe it was written too long, or maybe i spent this whole book thinking the romance was going to be with Kanin a fellow vampire, I want to know more about him. Im so confused how we were with Kanin for a bit then he just disappeared i wanted him as the love interest... I loved the whole world and the major dystopian vibes. I loved seeing how Allie was going through all these changes internally and what life was like for the humans. I will be continuing because I am just too curious
Spoiler
but not for a bit cause I can tell we're gonna be traveling for a whileeee but we better get back with Kanin, he was the most interesting apart aside from Allison..
Well well well. Finally a vampire book I didn't cringe at!
Out of my deep love for Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series, I put my eye roll on pend mode and decided I would give this a try. And OH MY GOD was I glad!!! Fantastic story, awesome main character that doesn't leaving you sighing in frustration but rather fist pumping the air and flowing literature that has you hooked from the get go.
Grab your cup of tea, cuddle into your blanket, and get ready to be immersed into another reality. This book will certainly take you there.

From my review archives:
Yes, you might be wondering if I’m once again in my vampire fan stage, but to answer your and even my parents’ question, no, I’m not. I have read too many vampire books in those days and really thought that nothing would impress m anymore. Basically, I just wanted to read something bloody and what s better than a pure vampire book that has been on my to-read list for nearly 3 years. I gave it a try…
It’s a really nice book if you’re new to vampires, however, if you’re a near expert as I am, it might not give you anything new. what I was enjoying in the book was the idea of the Virus. yes it’s pretty cliche, but come on, who doesn’t like the whole apocalyptical world? Theme? I can say, that I truly enjoy it. it’s leek a guide of what to do and don’t’s. The character that I loved the most was Kanin. True, he didn’t appear much and mostly he was silent, but he kind of reminded me of raise from noblesse. true, he’s not as all-powerful and hot, but his “love” for humans was what made me think of Rai. (For those who have no idea what Noblesse is, it’s a Korean webtoon, you should really read it, it’s awesome!). Okay, back to the review. Allie is a great character and you’ll love her lots. You’ll question her choice of becoming a vampire, but only in the first second, afterwards, you’ll just try to understand all her choice.
One thing that I really liked and enjoyed in the book was the description of the vampires. In short Kanin’s definition of war was happening to Allie. Who I really wanted to smack and kill was Stick, he frustrated and annoyed me too much. You’ll know why when you read the book, but the way he relayed Allie was too cowardly. To m disappointment, there were no vivid bloodshed. there’s some drama, but nothing too shocking, well, for me that is. Are you ready to set on the journey to become a vampire and look for a mystical place called - Eden? Are you up for a small dosage of vampire x human romance? I’m still rooting for Karin, I really want to know how the romance plot will go in that direction and will it ever? If Allie stays with Zeke it will surely be too cliche, but we’ll see what’s going to happen in the next books. Enjoy it to your fullest and don’t forget to share your thoughts below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos. Don’t miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading!
