i'm truly surprised at how feminist this novel is. from what i know, women didn't really have the independence that jane has in the book back in bronte's lifetime. it's such a wonderful coming of age novel. i'm not a huge fan of the age gap between her and mr rochester (20 years?!). throughout the novel jane maintains her position as a morally upstanding character. there were so many times bronte pointed out that jane wasn't beautiful, but she did have great character and i do think that was important to emphasize because of the role her morals play in the book. there was a little bit towards the end about st john going to "spread the message of God" to india that i wasn't thrilled about but colonization was all the rage in the 1800s. i did enjoy the irony in st john wanting to marry jane and his response to her refusing; definitely manipulative, but am satisfied at the way it played out.
parts of this felt like a slog to read though, to be honest! every main single character had multiple soliloquies and they all sounded the same during their tirades. i would skim a little during those parts. i was, however, surprised at how engaged i was throughout the rest of the novel. the plot was never stagnant. i know it was just because i struggled to understand older english. it felt "cliche" at times - but i don't doubt that bronte was the one who created those "cliches."

Always fun rereading this classic.
This time I read it with my class, and they were not big fans. They found Mr. Rochester to be cringy.
