YA Fantasy
I read this series as a child and loved it. Lyra and Pan are rascals and their adventure felt sprawling and epic. I loved the side characters and how they popped up all over the world. 

I've reread the series as an adult and still love it even though I have a better understand of the religious stories and undertones. For me they don't really take away from the fun I experience in the world of The Golden Compass.

the great thing about rereading books from your childhood is realizing you had absolutely no idea what the hell was going on when you first read it. this proves i was born as a "i'm here for vibes not plot" type of reader because i know for sure that 8 year old me was NOT processing what was happening here.
the world building was extensive, and like most first books of a series, it dragged in a lot of parts, but felt necessary to understand the severity of what was going on in this world and how the magic works.
the language used throughout this book was difficult even for 27 year old me to fully wrap my head around, but maybe that's because i'm just getting back into the swing of reading more than just fanfiction.
i fell in love all over again with lyra, pan, and iorek, and i can't wait to rediscover all the adventures and mischief they get up to.
