I loved this book as a kid and I still do. There's something amazing about a children's book that does not pull its punches: friends get hurt, betrayed or worse and that makes the stakes real.

I love the way the world works. Both its magic system with the dust and dæmons, and the various cultures inspired by our world. (I did get jumpscared by my mothertongue a few times haha). I especially loved the section where Iorek challenges Iofur. The scene of these big noble bears fighting is something that always stuck with me.

Lyra is a great protagonist as well. She's stubborn and clever and so true to herself and so fiercely loyal. She's a great role model for girls reading this series in that way.

So yeah: excited to reread the next two parts!

It’s really interesting to read this book after reading Paradise Lost- the ending is near identical, and it’s interesting how Pullman seems to be in direct conversation with Milton. I also appreciated the Homeric similes in the fight scene between the two bears- it was an interesting thing to include. I wonder if this book could be seen as an epic.
