It’s definitely a middle grade fantasy book and it is awesome to see this girl go on to save so many and help so many. I don’t think I’ll continue on with the series because as an adult it was a little slow for me, but I definitely could see certain students who would really appreciate this fantasy world, and all that happens within it.

This book slaps just as hard as when I first read it, probably at least 18 years ago. It's not a kids book, although a kid can read it – and miss a lot of the symbolism just like I did first time around.
I totally loved this book! And the audio was excellently voice acted with a great cast! Had me totally invested
And having just read the Narnia series I think this makes a very interesting counterpoint to its overt Christian themes. While it also manages to do great world building and become its own thing.
I really liked how it was science that is discovering a new world and that the church doesn’t want people to find it. The children indoctrination is terrifying and I think it feels true coming from my own experience. The way they justify the means of the actions on the kids to get to their hypocritical ends. I really enjoyed how innately empathetic the demons are. I’ve always liked edgy stuff
