I haven't quite warmed to Malcom Fox, but I can't get enough of Rebus and Clarke.

Thank you, thank you, Ian Rankin for finding work for Rebus. :)

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I should like to see Mr. Rankin return John Rebus to the center of the universe. I like the other primary characters, but it was John Rebus that hooked me from the start. I should probably read a Rebus book even if no crime was involved. That said, it is my opinion that Mr. Rankin deserves his position as a pillar of the contemporary crime fiction guild of writers.

4 and 1/2

What can I say? This was brilliant! I really like the idea of bringing Fox and Rebus together, they work so well together! Add it Siobhan and Big Ger Cafferty plus two extremely well built storylines, what more can an Ian Rankin fan ask? Oh yes, Rebus falling for a dog... and there was that too!

This complex Scottish murder mystery keeps you guessing up until the very end. With intriguing characters, evocative description and page-turning action, this is a hard book to put down.

A retired QC is found murdered, a slip of paper in his wallet that reads: I'm going to kill you for what you did. Then someone takes a shot at Rebus' arch rival, Big Ger Cafferty, who reveals he has received the same note. Rebus is the only one Cafferty will speak with so he is brought into the investigation as a consultant.

In a lot of long-running series, you get the feeling the author only continues them because they are sure money-makers, but at best, the stories are phoned in. Not so with Ian Rankin. He cares about these characters, even the "baddies", and it shows. Even Dogs in the Wild may be his best Rebus yet.

I think that now Rebus is retired it is really hard to actually right him into Police procedurals. I love the character but seriously when is enough enough.

I love Rebus, you love Rebus, so fine, we'll all keep reading the series. But as much as we love the protagonist and his creator, the books are starting to feel tired. Inserting Malcolm Fox into the mix probably doesn't help.

4.5* rounded down.

Malcolm Fox is co-opted onto a team from Glasgow come to trace a haulier who has gone missing with illegal property belonging to the Stark family (also from Glasgow). Siobhan Clarke is on a team investigating the death of a former influential lawyer and Rebus is drawn in when his old frenemy Cafferty is shot at. Eventually all the threads are drawn together and Rebus manages to acquire a dog.

Certainly the best Rebus for a while; I managed to keep on top of the plot and who every one is all the way through! I still find Fox's character/personality hard to fathom, so it is a good thing that Rebus can be relied upon to be the same as ever.
